  Smoking

Since 1939, numerous studies have been conducted to determine whether smoking is a ealth hazard. The trend of the evidence has been consistent and indicates that there is a serious health risk. Research teams have conducted studies that show beyond all reasonable doubt that tobacco smoking is associated with a shortened life expectancy1.

Cigarette smoking is believed by most research workers in this field to be an important

actor in the development of cancer of the lungs and cancer of the throat and is believed to be related to cancer of some other organs of the body. Male cigarette smokers have a higher death rate from heart disease than non-smoking males. Female smokers are thought to be less affected because they do not breathe in the smoke so deeply.

Apart from statistics, it might be helpful to look at what tobacco does to the

human body. Smoke is a mixture of gases, vaporized chemicals, minute particles of ash and

other solids. There is also nicotine, which is powerful poison, and black tar. As smoke is breathed in, all those components from deposits on the membranes of the lungs. One point of concentration is where the air tube and bronchus divides. Most lung cancer begins at this point.

Filters and low tar tobacco2 are claimed to make smoking to some extent safer, but they can only slightly reduce, not eliminate the hazards.

  vaporize [vepraz] v. (使)蒸发 nicotine [nkti:n] n.

membrane [membrein] n.膜 bronchus [brks] n.

该题源于第一段最后一个句子中的子句:tobacco smoking is associated with a shortened life expectancy(抽烟与人的预期寿命缩短有关)。

Female smokers are thought to be less affected because they do not breathe in the smke so deeply.

  Plants and Mankind

Botany, the study of plants, occupies a peculiar position in the history of human knowledge. We dont know what our Stone Age1 ancestors knew about plants, but from what we can observe of preindustrial societies that still exist, a detailed learning of plants and their properties must be extremely ancient2. This is logical. Plants are the basis of the food pyramid for all living things, even for other plants. They have always been enormously important to the welfare of people, not only for food, but also for clothing, weapons, tools, dyes3, medicines, shelter, and many other purposes. Tribes living today in the jungle of the Amazon4 recognize hundreds of plants and know many properties of each. To them botany has no name and is probably not even recognized as a special branch of "knowledge" at all.

Unfortunately, the more industrialized we become the farther away we move from direct contact with plants, and the less distinct our knowledge of botany grows. Yet everyone comes unconsciously on an amazing amount of botanical knowledge5, and few people will fail to recognize a rose, an apple, or an orchid6. When our Neolithic7 ancestors, living in the Middle East about 10,000 years ago, discovered that certain grasses could be harvested and their seeds planted for richer yields the next season, the first great step in a new association of plants and humans was taken. Grains were discovered and from them flowed the marvel of agriculture: cultivated crops. From then on, humans would increasingly take their living from the controlled production of a few plants, rather than getting a little here and a little there from many varieties that grew wild and the accumulated knowledge of tens of thousands of years of experience and intimacy with plants in the wild would begin to fade away8 .

Will Hillary Be the Next American President?

Back in 1969,US President Richard Nixon confidently predicted:“In the next 50 years,we shall see a woman president, perhaps sooner than you think1.”

Today, not too far off Nixon’s deadline,America is looking at that possibility. Over the weekend,Hillary Rodham Clinton, wife of former president Bill Clinton, announced her run for 2008 presidency.

US polls indicate that Americans feel comfortable with a female president. A New York Times survey found nearly all Americans saying they would vote for president if she were qualified.

However, accepting the theoretical notion of a female leader is quite different from voting an actual woman. In fact, there is still widespread distrust of a woman in the top position.

This is partly due to the biased thinking that women are weak on national security, though they might be strong on education and health care. This damages their prospects as a presidential contender.

“There’s still an inherent nervousness on the part of voters putting a woman in as the ultimate decision-maker. Control of the army and border security are sorts of traditionally male jobs,” commented Amy Walter,an American campaign analyst. “That’s where! think voters consciously or unconsciously have difficulties with women candidates.”

Women have held the top job in other major Western countries. In 1979,Britain elected Margaret Thatcher prime minister .Last year,Germany made Angela Merkel its first female chancellor.

In the US,no woman has succeeded in being nominated as a presidential candidate. One woman did make the attempt:Elizabeth Dole. In 1999,she tried to get the Republican Party nomination. But Dole could only raise $ 5 million for her bid-compared with the $ 56 million George W. Bush raised.

So Barriers lie ahead for Hillary if she wants to make history by becoming the first female US president. With the Iraqi war underway, she’ll find it even harder.

“I don’t feel that our society is ready for a woman president. The enemy we face does not respect females the same way we have come to see them as equals. If we were not in this war,I would support a woman president2,”said Chris Dildy,a computer engineering student.

  1. “In the next 50 years,we shall see a woman president, perhaps sooner than you think.”

2.If we were not in this war,I would support a woman president.

  Going Back to Its Birthplace

No sporting event takes hold of the worlds attention and imagination like the Olympic Games. The football World Cup fascinates fans in Europe and South America; baseballs World Series is required viewing in North America; and the World Table Tennis Championships attracts the most interest in Asia.

But the Olympics belong to the whole world. Now, after travelling to 17 countries over 108 years, the summer Games are returning to Athens, the place where the first modern Olympics was held.

Participation in the Games is looked on not only as an achievement, but also as an honour. The 16 days between August 13 and 29 will see a record 202 countries compete, up from Sydneys 199. Afghanistan is back, having been banned from Sydney because the Taliban government didnt let women do sports. There is also a place for newcomers East Timor and Kiribati.

A total of 10,500 athletes will compete in 28 sports, watched by 5.3 million ticket-paying viewers as well as a television audience of 4 billion.

Athens is to use its rich history and culture to make the Olympics as special as possible. The Games will open with cycling events which start in front of the Parthenon and Acropolis monuments. The final event will be a historic mens marathon following the original route run by Phidippides in 490 BC to bring news of victory over the Persians.

The ancient stadium at Olympia, first used for the Games nearly three centuries ago, will stage the shot put competitions. And the Panathenian Stadium, where the first modem Olympics was held, is to host the archery(射箭) events.

If the well-known ancient sites deliver a great sense of history to the Games, the 39 new venues add a modern touch to the city of Athens. The main Olympic stadium, with a giant glass and steel roof, is the landmark(标志) building of the Olympics.

"We believe that we will organize a magical Games," said Athens 2004 President Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki. "Our history with the Olympic Games goes back nearly 3,000 years, and Athens 2004 could be the best ever."

Even ancient Egypts mighty pyramid builders were powerless in the face of the famine that helped bring down their civilian around 2180BC. Now evidence gleaned from mud deposited by the River Nile suggests that a shift in climate thousands of kilometers to the south was ultimately to blem -- and the same or worse could happen today.

The ancient Egyptians depended on the Niles annual floods to irrigate their crops. But any change in climate that pushed the African monsoons southwards out of Ethiopia would have diminished these floods.

Dwindling rains in the Ethiopian highlands would have meant fewer plants to establish the soil. When rain did fall it would have washed large amounts of soil into the Blue Nile and into Egypt, along with sediment from the White Nile.

The Blue Nile mud has a different isotope signature from that of the White Nile. So by analyzing isotope differences in mud deposited in the Nile Delta, Michael Krom of leeds University worked out what proportion of sediment came from each branch of the river.

Krom reasons that during periods of drought, the amount of the Blue Nile mud in the river would be relatively high. He found that one of these periods, from 4,500 to 4,200 years ago, immediately predates the fall of the Egypts Old Kingdom.

The weakened waters would have been catastrophic for the Egyptians. Changes that affect food supply dont have to be very large to have a ripple effect in societies, says Bill Ryan of the Lamont Doherty Earth Observatory in New York.

Similar events today could be even more devastating, says team member Daniel Stanley, a geoarchaeologist from the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.. Anything humans do to shift the climate belts would have an even worse effect along the Nile system because the populations have increased dramatically.

  Can You Hear This?

When something creates a sound wave in a room or an auditorium, listeners hear the sound wave directly from the source. They also hear the reflections as the sound bounces off the walls, floor, and ceiling. These are called the reflected wave or reverberant(反射)sound, which can be hearde ven after the sound is no longer coming from the source.

The reverberation time of an auditorium is determined by the volume orinterior size of the auditorium. It is also determined by how well or how poorly the walls, ceiling, floor, and contents of the room(including the people) absorb sound. There is no ideal reverberation time, because each use of an auditorium calls for different reverberation. Speech needs to be understood clearly; therefore rooms used for talking must have a short reverberation time. The full-sound performance of music such as Wagner operas or Mahler symphonies should have a long reverberation time. The light, rapid musical passages of Bach or Mozart need a reverberation time somewhere between.

Acoustic problems often are caused by poor auditorium design. Smooth, curved reflecting surfaces create large reflections. Parallel (平行的)walls reflect sound back and forth, creating a rapid, repetitive pulsing effect. Large pillars (柱)and comers can cause acoustic shadows as the sound waves try to pass around the object. Some of these problems can be solved by using absorbers and reflectors to change thereverberation time of a room. For example, hanging large reflectors, called clouds, over the performers will allow some sound frequencies to reflect and others to pass to achieve a pleasing mixture of sound.

41 This passage is mainly about

  A.Sound waves and their effects.

B.the types of music or chestrasplay.

  C.walls of an auditorium.

  D.the design of an auditorium.

42.Wagner operas and Mahler symphonies with full-sound effect have.

  A.a short reverberation time.

  B.an intermediate reverberationtime.

  C.no reverberation time.

  D.along reverberation time.

43.This passage suggests that a good auditorium should

  A.get rid of all reflections.

  B.not have absorbers.

C.achieve a pleasing mixture of sound

  D.have smooth surfaces.

  44.Large pillars and corners may

  A.make sound rich and full.

  B.be cures for sound problems.

  C.be sources of sound problems.

  D.function as effectively asclouds.

45.The word" acoustic" in the last paragraph has something to dowith

  A.performance

  B.sound

  C.audience

  D.weather

42.D 文章第二段提到“The full-sound performance of music such as Wagner operas or Mahler symphonies should have a long reverberation time”,所以答案为D。

43.C 文章最后一句话提到“For example, hanging large reflectors, called clouds, over the performers will allow some sound frequencies to reflect and others to pass to achieve a pleasing mixture of sound”,可知C为正确选项。

44.C 原文中提到“Large pillars (柱)and corners can cause acoustic shadows as the sound waves try to pass around the object.”,由此可知大柱子与角落会导致声音问题。

  Deforestation and Desertification(沙漠化)

The Sahel zone lies between the Sahara desert and the fertile savannahs(热带大草原)of northern Nigeria and South Sudan. The word sahel comes from Arabic and means marginal or transitional , and this is a good description of these semi-arid(半干旱)lands, which occupy much of the Western African countries of Mail, Mauritania, Niger, and Chad.

Unfortunately, over the last century the Sahara desert has steadily crept southwards eating into once productive Sahel lands. United Nations surveys show that over 70 percent of the dry land in agriculture use in Africa has deteriorated over the last 30 years. Droughts have become more severe, the most recent lasting over twenty years in parts of the Sahel region. The same process of desertification is taking place across southern Africa as the Kalahari desert advances into Botswana and parts of South Africa.

One of the major causes of this desert advance is poor agricultural land use, driven by the pressures of increasing population. Over grazing一keeping too many farm animals on the land一means that grasses and other plants cannot recover, and scarce water supplies are exhausted. Over cultivation一trying to grow too many crops on poor land一 results in the soil becoming even less fertile and drier, and beginning to break up.Soil erosion (侵蚀)follows, and the land turns into desert.

Another cause of desertification is loss of tree cover. Trees are cut down for use as fuel and toclear land for agricultural use. Tree roots help to bind the soil together, toconserve moisture, and to provide a habitat for other plants and animals. When trees are cut down, the soil begins to dry and loosen, wind and rain erosion increase, other plant species die, and eventually the fertile topsoil may be almost entirely lost, leaving only bare rock and dust.

The effects of loss of topsoil and increased drought are irreversible. They are, however, preventable. Careful conservation of tree cover and sustainable agricultural land use have been shown to halt deterioration of soils and lessen the effects of shortage ofrainfall. One project in Kita in south-west Mali funded by UNDP has involved local communities in sustainable management of forest, while at the same time providing a viable(有活力的)agricultural economy. This may be a model for similar projects in other West African countries.

  Sports Star Yao Ming

If Yao Ming is not the biggest sports star in the world, he is almost certainly the tallest. At 2.26m, he is the tallest player in the National Association (NBA) and holds the record as the most towering Olympian ever tocompete in the Games.

But what really stands out about the giant center is his celebrity(名气). Few, if any, Chinese athletes are as well-known as Yao around the world.People across the globe are fascinated with Yao, not only for his basketball prowess (杰出的才能) but also for being a symbol of international commerce.

When Yao joined the Houston Rockets as the No.1 pick in the 2002NBA draft (选拔), he was the first international player ever to be selected first. Hisassets on the court are clear enough — no NBA player of his size has ever possessed his mobility, so he is a handful (难对付的人)for opponents on either end ofthe court. But what makes Yao invaluable to the Rockets organization is his roleas a global citizen and as a bridge to millions of potential basketball fans in China.

When it was announced in February that Yao would miss the rest of the NBA season and possibly the Olympics with a stress fracture (骨折)in his left foot, a collective shudder (震动) spread across China. After considerable debate and discussion, Yao opted to get his foot surgically treated in an operation that placed several tiny screws across the bone, to offer his over burdened foot more support. The surgery was a success, and though the estimated four-month recovery period will leave him little time to prepare with Team China, Yao has vowed to be ready for the Beijing Olympics.

Yao wrapped up a 10-day trip to China, where he underwent a series of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatments, hoping to accelerate his recovery process. Western experts are generally skeptical of TCMs benefits, although new research from the University of Rochester suggests that a certain compound derived from shellfish may speed stimulate bone repair.

"There is no reason to dismiss TCM," Yao told a press conference in Beijing. “It’s been used in our country for thousands of years. I dont think that it’s shorton science.”
