Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen, it’s a great honor to speak here: I am an English teacher.
People often say: Teacher is the engineer of human spirit. Last September, I became a teacher. How to become a real teacher? This is the first difficulty that I come across in my career. At first, I felt so good and fun to stay with so many lovely students, then I integrated with them, and soon, the problem came out. If a teacher can’t set up her dignity in front of the students, it will make the class teaching more difficult. In my lessons, the students often kept on talking, acting, and asking questions. What should I do? I can’t get along with them like this any more. I must be strict with them. Pay more attention to what should be praised, what should be criticized. Any carelessness is not permitted. At last, the class discipline became better.
Nowadays, the importance of learning English is obvious. The world becomes globalization and unify. The association of each country is closer and closer. People call the earth as a global village. English is the first current language in the international world. The communication of politics, economy and culture is upon English. As we know, we will take a beating if we lay behind. How to catch up with the world? That is, study English well to gain the first hand data. The entrance of WTO, the Olympic Games which will be held in 2008, shows that we must learn English well as quickly as possible. Forcing study won’t stay in the heart, feeding knowledge into the brain won’t get a good result, and high mark isn’t our teaching goal. It must be vivid and vigorous. We can change our study contents into games, performances, competitions and so on. Let them believe English is easy and funny.
As the step of history is advancing, the demand of English teaching is changeable. The junior students are not what we know as before. They have a lot of knowledge, and are good at combining English with other subjects, such as history, geography, physics, chemistry and so on. Their English level is higher than what we thought. Many of them started learning English in their primary school. in a twinkle of an eye, sixteen years has passed since i became an English teacher. looking back, i have experienced pleasure, success as well as confusion and sadness. but i think there is much to be grateful for. during the first two years in sz, i had a hard time in my teaching career. why do i say so? on one hand, i like the city because it is young, vital, beautiful and full of challenges. on the other hand, many students in the common classes are quite different from my former students. they didn't study hard at all. they were too indolent in class, talking, sleeping and doing anything that they like. it is a common sight for them not to do homework. they didn't care about their school marks. they just wanted to get much but paid little. what is more, they showed deaf ears to your advice or criticism for their mistakes or faults. when i wanted to point out their mistakes, i should weigh my words over and over not to hurt their feelings. i felt as if i lost my way in the sea. i even had such an idea: to give up the job as an English teacher.
but an event changed my mind. one day, a student had a talk with me in my office. his words always linger in my mind. he said: "ms hu, may i ask you a question?" i answered "sure." then he talked just like an old friend of mine. he said: "i can see you don't feel happy now because many of us don't study hard. we are too naughty and sometimes we make troubles, or play tricks in class on purpose. we are forced to learn many things that are boring, useless and not valuable. so we are tired of studying. have you ever been forced to do anything that you really didn't want to do? if so, you can understand why the students do so." i was deeply shocked by his words. as a teacher, i seldom think about the question in the position of the students. then i asked him what was his idea of a good English teacher. he was a little shy first but after a moment he was eloquent again. he said: "i think a good teacher should be the students' close friend who shares their ups and downs. he should be passionate about many things―books, sports, literature, films and fashion. he is humorous and not too critical about the students' mistakes or faults. he not only asks the students to listen to him but also likes listening to the students. he nourishes and broadens our horizon because of his profound knowledge. he won't just focus on the students' marks but cares more about the students' development in many ways. in his class he should have a powerful emotional impact. so after his lesson we can read, write, think and learn better…"

Since I first steeped on my platform, I have decided to be a good and successful English teacher. However, in my class, when I gave lessons to my students, filled with enthusiasm and passion, some of the students always looked so tired and sleepy. Absolutely, to be a good and successful English teacher is not an easy job. I need to have an excellent command of English myself to make my students appreciate me and enjoy my class. I need to have the abilities to provide a comfortable and relaxing atmosphere and environment for the students’ study. I have to adopt efficient and various teaching methods to my students’ level. I need to develop my teaching art and skills. I should make full of each student’s ability and always encourage them to give them confidence. I’ve learned to be the students’ teacher, their elder sister, their friend, their mother and so on. I show my care and love for them. Whenever they are in trouble, being sick, feeling blue or in a bad mood, I am the person that will try to take care of them, talk with them or try to help them balance themselves in good condition. I respect and trust them. When they fall in love with sb., quarrel with friends, cannot get along well with parents, etc. I’ll analyze the pros and cons, the advantages and disadvantages, and give them some opinions or suggestions. I sympathize with and understand them. When they break the rules or do something wrong carelessly, I will help them out of trouble instead of scolding them. I am always strict with them and also place high and enthusiastic hopes on them to make them be strict with themselves and be confident of themselves.
Everyone needs love. Love is one of the most magical and wonderful feelings in the world. Teachers’ love for their students can make the impossible become possible. The truth is, however, we will lose more opportunities when we choose to take the "opportunity" fork at the crossroads. The other fork, ignored by us and defined as "fearful challenges", offers much more chances for the walker in competition. We have such an inclination in life to overestimate ourselves and hold a thoughtless attitude towards the negative outlook of things. We believe in the old saying, "Opportunity knocks but just once," so we always welcome it and devote all our spirit and efforts to it. The most devout believer of this saying are the graduates. Why? There are quite a number of them who pay full attention to positions in big cities and are willing to flood into developed areas under any circumstances, even though there will be too much uncertainty for their choices. Innumerable cases go straight to the same miserable end: God seems to refuse to help too many of His worshipers. To be honest I felt rather nostalgic when somebody told me I would make a speech before all of you fine people. I can still remember when I made my first speech in college. My heart would have jumped out of my chest if I hadn’t tried my best to control my breath. The reason lies in the fact that I really didn’t know what to say at that time!Well today, being a teacher of English for some years in Shenzhen, I have a strong sense of responsibility, which always fills me with strength and confidence. I am from Xinzhou Middle School located in the west part of Shenzhen. There are two extremes in my school. About 38% are from local resident families, whose parents are rich and some even rich enough to own several buildings. But some of the children in such families turned out to be slow in their lessons.
They seem to have everything but the motivation of learning. However, About 60% of the students are from working class families in the villages near by, whose parents hold temporary residence identities. Sometimes when we visit these students at home we noticed that a large proportion of their living standards are very critical. Some don’t even have desks good enough to finish their homework on. No wonder they appear quite reluctant to pay enough attention to the teachers in classes, and always find excuses not to finish their homework. And according to assessment criteria there are 40% students struggling to get a pass in the English learning. Some even can not make a proper sentence before they are going to take the matriculation examinations.
I still remember once I saw my student coming to school with one arm hanging on her neck. When asked she just said she was careless when she run across a pond, fell down and broke her arm. But later I got to know that she fell from the place she sleeps on the temporary second floor at home, where half of it is a small shop in the village, while she was climbing down the ladder. At that time she was in a hurry to go to school. Not until then did I realized how hard it is for some of our students to manage to survive in Shenzhen, let along concentrate in learning their lessons at school. I believe if children live in poverty, they learn to fight for their future, if children live in comfort they learn to enjoy themselves. Then come the question, “How could I help them?”
“What do they need most?” After some years of practicing I got to know three golden rules in English teaching in such kind of schools. Rule No.1 Getting to know what exactly problems in our students’ learning English have and trying best to give them individual instructions;Rule No.2 Try best to build up their confidence, let them have a taste of success. Make them believe that English is not that difficult as they thought to be;Rule No.3 Never trying to teach them the knowledge of English until they really mastered their own way of studying. For the most valuable knowledge is not the knowledge itself; it is the learning strategy.Rule No. 4 The most important aspect in teaching here is love we cherish during teaching. If we don’t love our students whole-heartedly we will never succeed in secondary education in Shenzhen.So from what my experience, “love” is the key to motivate our students!
