Part B
Tapescript:
W: Hi, Tom! I heard you’ve just had a new-born son.
M: Yes. I’m very excited. I had never thought that having a baby would make me think a lot about the future.
W: Oh? What are you thinking about?
M: I’m wondering what is life will be in ten years.
W: So you are predicting the future?
M: Not really. Being a teacher, I’m not sure if his education will be a lot different from what was for us when we were ten or twelve.
三问部分:
Question 1: How was the school when you were twelve?/ What was the school like when you were twelve?
Answer 1: I remember I had a classroom with about twenty students in it. Teachers used the white board rather than the computer screen in the classroom. There was not so much homework to do after class. So we had a lot of time to do sports outside.
Question 2: Do you think that sports will be the same?/ Will sports be the same in your opinion?
Answer 2: It’s hard to say. I just wonder if he will play games with his friends in the park. Actually, it worries me that kids don’t play sports freely as we did. I remember when I was twelve we would always play basketball games or baseball games. I don’t know if kids do that so much anymore. They may do something really different. You know, things change quickly these days.
Question 3: What will the biggest change be?/ What is the biggest change going to be?/ What can the biggest change be?/ What will the greatest change be?/ What is the greatest change going to be?/ What can the greatest change be?
Answer 3: I guess the greatest change might be the way of learning. Technology could change learning in ways that we cannot imagine. Maybe in the future, each student will have a robot to help with his reading and writing. This would make learning much more interesting and easier.
五答部分:
Question 1: Why was Tom so excited?
Answer 1: Because he just had a new-born son.

Time and Trust
Tom was invited by a university in New York City for a job interview which was set at 10:00 a.m. Tom had never been to the city and he wasn’t aware of the heavy morning traffic. When he was nearing the downtown, his bus was only able to move forward at a very slow pace with so many cars on the road. So he reached the university an hour late and missed the interview. Fortunately, he was offered another interview which was again at 10:00 a.m. two days later. Tom was very embarrassed about being late and decided that it would never happen again. So he started out very early on the day of the second interview. It was a freezing winter morning and Tom made his way in the falling snow. He reached the university two hours earlier and waited at the gate of the building. When the director came to work, he was surprised to see Tom so early. Tom explained that he did not want to be late again. The director called him in and gave him an offer right away, saying that a man who cared so much about time should be trusted.

Text 10
Phil Cleaver, a British designer, won a prize in the 2024 Global Zodiac Design Competition for his work well including ancient representations of the Chinese dragon.
To display his understanding of this year’s Chinese zodiac animal, the Chinese dragon, also known as “loong” according to its pronunciation in Chinese, Cleaver combined different symbolic objects in his work: an antique Chinese dragon-shaped pipe placed across an open book, with the book resting against a backboard.
“The loong itself is an antique pipe, beautiful in its detail, and it sits on a book that is a story of a dragon. The book is a very old symbol of knowledge ... the book reflects the knowledge and wisdom of the loong,” Phil Cleaver told Xinhua in a written interview.
This is his second time taking part in this contest. Last year, for the contest marking the Year of the Rabbit, he presented a print entitled Rabbit Moon, which he said was inspired by an ancient Chinese fairytale.
Referring to a comparison between the Western and Chinese dragons, Cleaver said the two types of dragons share some similarities in how they are shown in paintings, but Chinese culture contributes much better qualities to the dragons than the concept of a horrible animal well accepted in Western culture.
