There're no distractions when going skiing, but just fresh air and the challenge of learning a new sport.Socalled “bad kids” can leave their reputations behind at school and forge a better one outdoors. That's the theory behind the Adventure Therapy program, which a high school counselor has developed to help small groups of students with behavior problems become more confident and socially adapted.

The progressive program has seen 16 students go through it in its first two years, according to the founder Mike Reece of George McDougall High School. The former physical education teacher and ski instructor with a master's degree in psychology has seen troubled teenagers in the program develop healthy social habits before mastering an outdoor skill such as skiing.

The program began in the fall of 2008,after Reece convinced school authorities there was a need for outdoor activities to help students struggling with their schooling and exhibiting behavior problems.

“These are the kids who might be asked to leave the class,or be suspected of wrongdoings, you know, always getting a hard time in the regular school system,” Reece said.“So I brought them out and had them get involved in the planning. They felt part of the process and they felt special.”

Students in the program join a group of seven peers facing similar difficulties every two weeks for an hour of group therapy with Reece over a pizza lunch supplied by the school. The pizza's nice, but the program's real point is the monthly outdooractivity field trip, led by Reece and another teacher.

“I'm trying to expand their horizons and show them that something is out there for them,” Reece said.“A major part of the program is goalsetting and making plans. The overall goal would include fostering a sense of optimism, connectedness, and communicating skills.”
