In the recent, it is reported that students commitsuicides after school authorities make publicannouncement of disciplinary measures againstthose culprits violating certain school regulations.Oftentimes, those culprits’ parents would sueschools for compensations. No matter how muchmoney they are compensated, it can not change the fact that the dead students are not toregenerate. Some educationalists hence suggestthat public announcement of disciplinarymeasures be abolished. They argue that students are fragile in psychology for they are theonly children and usually get too much protection from families. But should theyget away withpunishments? I do not think so.
Firstly, as students have already borne in their mind the consequences that if they breakcertain school regulations, they must take the responsibility. They should accept any duepunishments. I do not believe that those students have no idea of what those regulations areor any previous regulation enforcements. Generally speaking, they are repeatedly told not tobreach school norms and regulations by their head teachers and parents. Before students sitcertain exams, they will be reminded again of disposing of any materialrelevant toexaminations. They will also be informed what consequences they are to bear if they don’tconform to the regulations. Therefore, if they still intend to break norms and regulations, theymust accept any forms of punishment without complaints. Otherwise, norms and regulationswould have no bonding effects.
Secondly, the purpose of public announcement of disciplinary measures is to help thoseculprits by supervision of the public. As people tend to hold their mistakes from being revealedto other people, they actually avoid acknowledging their mistakes and are unwilling to correctthem. After the publication of their mistakes, culprits would be judged by their classmates, friends and teachers, and hence they can be imposed pressures not to err again. Without thepublication, as those culprits may regard school authorities as lenient, they can get away withlight punishments. It is more likely that they would err in the same manner.
In a word, the public announcement of disciplinary measures means to help those culprits, instead of punishing them for the punishment’s sake. Some culprits may be not ready to acceptthe criticism after the public announcement is made. If this is the case, why do they not take awhile to decide whether it is worthwhile to make these mistakes? Isn’t it irresponsible thatthey make mistakes and want to get away with duepunishments?

The other day, a professor from Peking University gave a lecture “Chinese Intellectuals and Written Cultural Text”. In his lecture, he held that Chinese intellectuals have lost the written cultural text since the May 4th movement. His opinion set us thinking that the loss of traditional humane education resulted in a crisis of cultural education.
With the rapid development of economy, the living standard of the Chinese people has improved a lot in terms of material wealth. In a period when economics take priority, people pay more aned more attention to profit. At present, moneymaking and pleasure seeking are becoming a popular fashion. On the other hand, there appears a barren field of spirit in today’s society. It has become unexpectedly hard to rebuild the paradise of traditional culture.Ideological confusion, moral decline and a chaotic cultural market, all this shows that it is the high time to have something done inorder to tackle the problem of cultural orientation. Our times call for an ideal humane education.
It is unwise to discard traditional Chinese culture as a whole. Some of the elements of this culture can be made use of in the reconstruction of our spiritual civilizaiton directly or wit5h some adaptation. Our attitude towards tradition should be “discarding the dross and selecting the essence”. The humane education of the past can serve as a supplement to our Marxist education. It should start from primary school. In this way, our children will get educated so as to be possessed of a perfect personality. The national morale will be deeply rooted in people’s mind, and will help push forward the growth of economy.
To sum up, we can find it badly necessary to build up an ideal humane education. We should find an efficient way to develop our humane education and dig out5 more resources form traditional Chinese culture.

The moment I saw the topic,a post originallysubmitted in Peking University BBS occurred to me.The post composed of a conversation between aChinese young man, the author, and a waiter comingfrom Japan. The author suffered frustration whenthe waiter asked him about Chinese culture.Surprisingly, the Japanese demonstrated that he got command of more Chinese culture thanmost Chinese young people. I do not know what your initial response is supposing that youwere set in the circumstance. As a matter of fact, Chinese language course has drawn scantattention among college students, for many students lay their emphasis on English learning. Iam of opinion that Chinese language course should be set in the category of compulsorycourses in college curriculum.
Firstly, it is high time for college students to re-learn Chinese language. For many Chinesestudents, they just learn Chinese language for examinations’ sake in elementary schools andhigh schools. In other words, many learn Chinese language to get high scores instead ofgrasping the essence of Chinese culture. In fact, we can not measure one’s understanding ofculture by how many scores he get in the examinations or how many poems and essays he hasmemorized. What matters is whether one can figure out the gist and facilitate his life throughwhat he gains from the learning. In college, students are not imposed as much pressure as inhigh school in learning Chinese language.Besides, they are more mature than in childhood andhavethe ability to think critically. If they do not seize the chance to re-learn the Chineselanguage, odds are that they can not inherit wisdoms of our anncestors and not get preparedfor the future.
Secondly, since western cultures are looming large in China with the advent of globalization,Chinese traditional culture seems to be endangered. Many people, especially the youth, areinterested in learning foreign language, English in particular, and their cultures. They prefer towatch American movies, Japanese cartoons, and listen to foreign music. While western culturalproducts are well received, the popularity of the Chinese counterpart is on the decrease. When foreign cultures are so prevalent in China, will our future generation figure out ourChinese cultural identity? As the basic manifestation of culture, Chinese language deservesmore attention and better treatment. Chinese universities should take the responsibilities topreserve and develop our traditional culture, Chinese language in particular.
All in all, as traditional Chinese culture and wisdom manifest themselves in Chinese language, adopting the course in the curricula will not only educate college students, but also helppreserve and develop Chinese culture.

Television programs regularly entertain, educate, effect and even frighten the majority of our children. Most children are allowed to watch whatever program is on, with little thought on the effect that particular show will have on a child. Most programs can be classed as beneficial or harmful, according to what effect the program might have on a child.
The beneficial television programs are mainly thouse that educate the young. There are often specials on animal life. A few regular children’s programs develop the child’s interest in school-type learning by stressing numbers and the alphablt, and that encourages him or her to be creative. The beneficial commercials, such as those on anti-smoking, anti-litter, and health, should be included in this category.
On the opposite side are the shows, which are generally harmful to children. Many commercials, especially those sponsoring the chiildren’s programs, are deliberately written to create a desire for an unnecessary product such as sugar coated cereals and candy. All adult programs that include violence or sex scenes can at best fill a child’s mind with confusing or misleading ideas, and could possib ly harden the child to violence.
Thoughtful parents will definitely not allow their children to view the bad programs. A child’s viewing time should be limited to watching educationlly benefical programs.

Given the fact that many college students havedifficulties in finding jobs in the recent, thousands ofhigh school students are reported to refuse to takethe National College Entrance Examination. The newsseems so convincing that many students, theirparents, and the society reach the conclusion thatreceiving college education is a waste of time andmoney. Undoubtedly, these students can earn some money working in big cities or runningtheir own business in the near future. However, I am of opinion that this view is myopic, which isto the detriment of personal development and China’s overall growth in the long term.
Firstly, in terms of personal development, university is not a vocational training center despitethe factthat a university diploma indicates graduates are more likely to find decent jobs.Instead, university is a place for personal cultivation and improvement. In universities, students will learn to find their real interests, perfect their personality, and form right outlookstoward the world.Furthermore, students will learn to gather, analyze, and evaluate informationso that they can resolve problems in their lives. For those who are suspicious of the value ofhigher learning to some extent, they can be regarded as plutolatry. They worship money andbelieve that money is everything in their lives.
Secondly, in terms of national growth, the advancement of a nation is characterized by itsgreatness of high education. In this sense, universities are the centers of research andacademic exploration.Take theUnited States for instance.Among the top 100 universities inthe world, the majority of them are located in theUnited States. The advancement of US higheducation is indicative of the fact that those universities produce the most Nobel Prizelaureates in comparison with other countries.American universities also turn out to be amagnet for most smart students around the world. Those universities contribute tremendousshare to the US’ growth through scientific and technological support.
In China, if the belief that receiving college education is a waste of time and money can not becorrectedin time, it is inevitable that China can only reap short-term GDP growth but will bedeprived of opportunity to become a competitive international players in the long run, for thehuman resource will be drained eventually.
In sum, receiving college education will benefit both individual and the country.Indicative of thedire job market for college graduates is not the uselessness of college education.Instead, college education means we should study harder to make a full preparation for the future.

It is generally agreed that society benefits from the work of its members. Compare the contributions of artists to society with the contributions of scientists to society. Which type of contribution do you think is valued more by your society? Give specific reasons to support your answer.
Artists and scientists both make valuable contributions to our society. It may seem sometimes that artists are more valued. That’s because those artists who are famous make a lot of money. However, they are relatively few. The fact is that scientists are more valued. They get more respect from society for the work they do.
Artists reflect their times and their culture. A painter or a writer shows us in pictures and words what we’re like as a people. They record our culture for future generations. Actors and other performers, like singers and dancers, entertain us. They take our minds off our troubles, and remind ushow beautiful and exciting our imaginations can be. Artists also help keep their societies mentally and emotionally healthy. For example, children that participate in the arts, such as painting or music, in school do better in their other studies. Art of all types is necessary to the human spirit.
The contributions scientists make to society are more obvious. They include the cars we drive, the computers we use at home and at work, and the appliances that help us cook our meals and clean our houses. All of these come from the ideas and hard work of scientists. Because of scientific discoveries, we’re living longer and more healthful lives. Scientists also contribute to the arts. Movies are the result of science. So are television, radio, and the recording of music on CDs.
Generally, scientists don’t make as much money as famous artists like film stars, opera singers or successful painters. However, our society gives them more respect, and they generally make a good living. Scientists are considered to be serious professionals, while artists are sometimes viewed as flaky, irresponsible people. So overall, I’d have to conclude that we value scientists more.
