I find it wholesome to be alone the greater part of the time.To be in company, even with the best,is soon wearisome.I love to be alone.I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude. We are for the most part more lonely when we go abroad among men than when we stay in our chambers.

A man thinking or working is always alone, let him be where he will.Solitude is not measured by the miles of space that intervene between a man and his fellows. The really diligent student in one of the crowded hives of Cambridge College is as solitary as a dervish in the desert. The farmer can work alone in the field or the woods all day, hoeing or chopping, and not feel lonesome.beacause he is employed;but when he comes home at night he cannot sit down in a room alone,at the mercy of his thoughts, but must be where he can "see the folks," and recreate, and,as he thinks.remunerate himself for his days solitude;and hence he wonders how the student can sit alone in the house all night and most of the day without ennui and "the blues";but he does not realize that the student, though in the house,is still at work in his field, and chopping in his woods,as the farmer ire his.and in turn seeks the same recreation and society that the latter does, though it may be a more condensed form of it.

We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value for each other. We meet at meals three times a day,and give each other a new taste of that old mushy cheese that we are.We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness,to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not come to open war.

We meet at the post office, and at the sociable, and about the fireside every night;we live thick and are in each others way,and stumble over one another, and I think that we thus lose some respect for one another.Certainly less frequency would suffice for all important and hearty communications.Consider the girls in a factory-never alone, hardly in their dreams. It would be better if there were but one inhabitant to a square mile,as where I live. The value of a man is not in his skin.

Youth is not a time of life;it is a state of mind;it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees;it is a matter of the will,a quality of the imagination,a vigor of the emotions;it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity,of the appetite for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of 60 more than a boy of 20.Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals.Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul.Worry,fear,self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.Whether 60 or 16,there is in every human being’s heart the lure of wonders, the unfailing appetite for what’s next and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart, there is a wireless station;so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, courage and power from man and from the infinite,so long as you are young. When your aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you’ve grown old, even at 20;but as long as your aerials are up,to catch waves of optimism, there’s hope you may die young at 80.

If I Rest,I RustThe significant inscription found on an old key---“If I rest,I rust”---would be an excellent motto for those who are afflicted with the slightest bit of idleness.Even the most industrious person might adopt it with advantage to serve as a reminder that,if one allows his faculties to rest, like the iron in the unused key, they will soon show signs of rust and, ultimately, cannot do the work required of them. Those who would attain the heights reached and kept by great men must keep their faculties polished by constant use,so that they may unlock the doors of knowledge, the gate that guard the entrances to the professions,to science,art,literature,agriculture---every department of human endeavor.Industry keeps bright the key that opens the treasury of achievement. If Hugh Miller, after toiling all day in a quarry, had devoted his evenings to rest and recreation,he would never have become a famous geologist. The celebrated mathematician,Edmund Stone, would never have published a mathematical dictionary, never have found the key to science of mathematics,if he had given his spare moments to idleness, had the little Scotch lad,Ferguson, allowed the busy brain to go to sleep while he tended sheep on the hillside instead of calculating the position of the stars by a string of beads,he would never have become a famous astronomer.Labor vanquishes all---not inconstant, spasmodic,or ill-directed labor;but faithful, unremitting, daily effort toward a well-directed purpose.Just as truly as eternal vigilance is the price of liberty,so is eternal industry the price of noble and enduring success.

Even if the word “pop” disappears from the English vocabulary, the influence of pop will remain.Pop has become part of British—and American—history.

There has always been a close cultural link,or tie, between Britain and English—speaking America, not only in literature but also in the popular arts, especially music. Before the Second World War the Americans exported jazz and the blues.During the 1950s they exported rock ’n’ roll, and star singers like Elvis Presley were idolized by young Britons and Americans alike.

Then in the early 1960s a new sound was heard, very different from anything which had so far come from the American side of the Atlantic. This was the Liverpool,or Merseyside,“beat”.Situated on the River Mersey in the north—eastern corner of the industrial Black Country,Liverpool was not a place which anyone visited for fun.Until the 1960s it was known only as one of Britain’s largest ports. Then, almost overnight,it became world famous as the birthplace of the new pop culture which,in a few years, swept across Britain and America, and across most of the countries of the western world.

A good companion is better than a fortune, for a fortune cannot purchase those elements of character which make companionship a blessing. The best companion is one who is wiser and better than ourselves, for we are inspired by his wisdom and virtue to nobler deeds.

“Keep good company and you shall be one of the number.” said George Herbert.“A man is known by the companion he keeps.” Character makes character in the associations of life faster than anything else.Purity begets purity, like begets like;and this fact makes the choice of companion in early life more important even than that of teachers and guardians.

It is true that we cannot always choose all of our companions, some are thrust upon us by business or the social relations of life,we do not choose them,we do not enjoy them;and yet,we have to associate with them more or less. The experience is not altogether without compensation,if there be principle enough in us to bear the strain.Still,in the main, choice of companions can be made, and must be made.It is not best or necessary for a young person to associate with “Tom,Dick, and Harry” without forethought or purpose. Some fixed rules about the company he or she keeps must be observed. The subject should be uttermost in the thoughts, and canvassed often.

A 4 feet cupcake weighing a hefty 1,224 pounds has been officially recognized as the worlds largest by the Guinness Book of Records.

Unveiled on Monday,in Detroit,Michigan,US,the enormous cake-with a whopping circumference of 11 feet-was over eight times bigger than the previous record holder.

Baked over the course of 12 hours, the gigantic cup cake was made from 200 pounds of flour,200 pounds of sugar,200 pounds of butter and 800 eggs.

When covered with frosting and custard, the one-of-a-kind dessert boasted 2,000,000 calories. The brainchild of American firm Gourmet Gift Baskets, the cupcake smashed the previous record of 151 pounds set on July 20.

Appearing at the Woodward Avenue Dream Cruise Classic Car Show in Detroit, proceeds from the sale of the cupcake went to cancer charity Passionately Pink for the Cure.

Ryan Abood,CEO of GourmetGiftBaskets.com,assembled a cupcake "dream team" including master-baker George Algarin to begin making the cake on August 12,five days before the scheduled unveiling.“美食礼品篮”网站的首席执行官莱恩·阿布德组建了一支制作杯蛋糕的“梦之队”,其中还包括特级面包师乔治·阿尔加林。

"We started off with a goal of a 7,000 pounds cupcake but fate intervened on Friday morning when the baking was supposed to be complete," said Mr Abood.

Humour and charm are a surprisingly powerful combination as a means of ascent in life.

I have met a number of entrepreneurs who have built fortunes on the back of their wit and general popularity-and not much else. They disarm us with self-deprecation,we enjoy their company-so why wouldnt we want to do business with them? Of course,it all has to be done well;sycophancy and flat jokes do not weave the same spell.

The British feel that some light relief amid the drudgery is essential for existence to be tolerable. It seems to be a cornerstone of our psychology and

culture. In London,to say someone has no sense of humour is to condemn them

utterly. Many important meetings I attend start with a little friendly banter to break the ice,a ritual to remind us that we are all human-rather than simply robots of commerce.

I am sure foreigners must think our levity is baffling. My defence is that Brits

subscribe to Horaces view: "A jest often decides matters of importance more effectively and happily than seriousness."

Some years ago,a partner of mine practised what I called "management by

laughter".He motivated and inspired by making the atmosphere at work fun, rather than the bullying and intimidation common in many workplaces.

In these litigious, politically correct times, the perils of making cheap gags can be considerable.Recently,I attended a dinner at a trade conference. The speaker was a well-known executive who told a number of jokes in poor taste, some at the expense of influential figures in the room.Just as a vulgar best mans speech at a wedding can strike the wrong note,so I sensed as we chatted after the speech that the jibes would not be swiftly forgotten.

Some one once said: "Brains, integrity and force may be all very well, but what you need today is charm." This is the age of celebrity, even in the boardroom, and none of us is impervious to the presence of those legendary characters when they switch on the full blast of their glittering personality.Perhaps it is their reputation, perhaps their smile, perhaps their brilliance with words-or possibly their rapt attention.

I am often struck how often young children utter the phrase "Look at me!" They want appreciation, and fundamentally not much changes, even when we are 50.Genuine approval from the boss can taste better than anything-even a pay rise.

Are charm and a sense of humour acquired traits? They certainly improve with effort and practice.Ronald Reagan used his years in showbiz to hone his performance skills before succeeding in politics.

I have sat with stand-up comics before they go on stage. The most brilliant appear almost nonchalant, rather than rehearsed or anxious, and their acts are mostly learnt word-perfect yet appear spontaneous.

So it is with outstanding business leaders who persuade their teams to laugh and try harder: they apply themselves assiduously to the task. Most world-class chief executives possess charisma-really a captivating blend of charm and wit. And,believe me,they graft at it far more than they admit.

"Are you happy?" I asked my brother,Ian,one day.

"Yes.No.It depends on what you mean," he said.

"Then tell me," I said,"when was the last time you think you were happy?"

  "April 1967," he said.

It served me right for putting a serious question to someone who has joked his way through life. But Ians answer reminded me that when we think about happiness,we usually think of something extraordinary,a pinnacle of sheer delight. And those pinnacles seem to get rarer the older we get.

For a child, happiness has a magical quality.I remember making hide-outs in newly cut hay, playing cops and robbers in the woods, getting a speaking part in the school play.Of course, kids also experience lows, but their delight at such peaks of pleasure as winning a race or getting a new bike is unreserved.

In the teenage years, the concept of happiness changes.Suddenly its conditional on such things as excitement, love, popularity and whether that zit will clear up before a prom night.I can still feel the agony of not being invited to a party that almost everyone else was going to.But I also recall the ecstasy of being plucked from obscurity at another event to dance with a John Travolta look-alike.

In adulthood the things that bring profound joy-birth,love,marriage-also bring responsibility and the risk of loss.Love may not last, loved ones die.For adults, happiness is complicated.

My dictionary defines happy as "lucky" or "fortunate",but I think a better definition of happiness is "the capacity for enjoyment".The more we can enjoy what we have, the happier we are.Its easy to overlook the pleasure we get from loving and being loved, the company of friends, the freedom to live where we please, even good health.

I added up my little moments of pleasure yesterday.First there was sheer bliss when I shut the last lunchbox and had the house to myself. Then I spent an uninterrupted morning writing, which I love. When the kids came home,I enjoyed their noise after the quiet of the day.

You never know where happiness will turn up next. When I asked friends what makes them happy, some mentioned seemingly insignificant moments."I hate shopping," one friend said."But theres this clerk who always chats and really cheers me up."

Another friend loves the telephone."Every time it rings,I know someone is thinking about me."

We all experience moments like these.Too few of us register them as happiness.

While happiness may be more complex for us,the solution is the same as ever.Happiness isnt about what happens to us;its about how we perceive what happens to us.Its the knack of finding a positive for every negative, and viewing a set-back as a challenge. Its not wishing for what we dont have, but enjoying what we do possess.

We meet at very short intervals, not having had time to acquire any new value for each other. We meet at meals three times a day,and give each other a new taste of that old mushy cheese that we are.We have had to agree on a certain set of rules, called etiquette and politeness,to make this frequent meeting tolerable and that we need not come to open war.We meet at the post office, and at the sociable, and about the fireside every night;we live thick and are in each others way,and stumble over one another, and I think that we thus lose some respect for one another.Certainly less frequency would suffice for all important and hearty communications.Consider the girls in a factory-never alone, hardly in their dreams. It would be better if there were but one inhabitant to a square mile,as where I live. The value of a man is not in his skin.

Sweet, wild berries plucked from roadside patches are a delightful side benefit of camping. Each summer,my husband Bob and I would send the kids off with their little metal buckets and the next day we would all enjoy the fruits of their labor: raspberry pancakes turned on the grill or firm blackberries to dot a hot cooked-on-the-campfire peanut butter sandwich.

The children looked forward to picking. We could usually find just about anything, from blueberries in early summer to raspberries and blackberries in August.Every year-except one.

"Theres nothing around here to pick!" five-year-old Julie complained, poking a stick into the dying fire one late summer evening.

The season had been too dry;what few blackberries were left on the bushes were hard as marbles.

"Yeah.I looked all over," added four-year-old Brian."Wish there was something."

That night, after the kids were zipped into their sleeping sacks and I was sure they werent awake,I handed Bob a bag of large marshmallows and I grabbed a bag of the miniatures.

"Get the lantern and follow me," I said."Were going to make a memory."

  "What?" He looked puzzled.

I told him about the kidscampfire conversation and Bob grinned,"Lets go!"

The next morning over pancakes,I said,"Kids,I think youre going to have something to pick today."

  "Really!" Julies eyes shone."What?"

  "What?" echoed Brian.

"Marshmallows," I said,as though Id said it every summer."Last night Daddy and I walked down toward the lake and it looks as though theyre just about ready to pick. Its a good thing were here now. They only come out one day a year."

Julie looked skeptical, and Brian giggled."Youre silly,Mom! Marshmallows come in bags from the store."

I shrugged."So do blackberries, but youve picked those, havent you? Somebody just puts them in bags."

  "Daddy,is that true?" He demanded.

Bob was very busy turning pancakes."Guess youll just have to go find out for yourself," he answered."Okay!"

They were off in a flurry, little metal buckets reflecting the morning sun.

"You nut," Bob said to me,laughing."It wont work."

  "Be a believer," I answered.

Minutes later our two excited children rushed into the clearing.

"Look! I got some that were just babies!" Julie held up a miniature.

"I picked the big ones!" said Brian."Boy,I want to cook one! Light the fire,Daddy, quick!"

"All right, all right, settle down." Bob winked at me."They wont spoil." He lit some small sticks while the kids ran for their hot dog forks.

"Mine will be better because theyre so little," predicted Julie.Brian shrugged, mashing two large ones on his fork.

We waited for the culinary verdict.

"Wow! Brians eyes rounded with surprise."These are sure better than those old ones in the bags!" He reached for another."These are so good!"

"Of course," I said."These are really fresh!"

Julie looked puzzled."How come all those marshmallow bushes dont have the same kinds of leaves?"

"Just different kinds, thats all," I replied quickly."Like flowers."

"Oh." She licked her fingers, seemingly satisfied with my answer. Then, studying the next marshmallow before she popped it into her mouth, she looked up with the sweetest smile and said softly,"Were so lucky that they bloomed today!"

Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, they serve some sort of purpose,to teach you a lesson or help figure out who you are or who you want to become. You never know who these people may be-your roommate, neighbor, professor, long lost friend, lover or even a complete stranger who, when you lock eyes with them, you know that very moment that they will affect your life in some profound way.

And sometimes things happen to you and at the time they may seem horrible, painful and unfair, but in reflection you realize that without overcoming those obstacles, you would have never realized your potential, strength, will power or heart.Everything happens for a reason.Nothing happens by chance or by means of good or bad luck.Illness, injury, love, lost moments of true greatness and sheer stupidity-all occur to test the limits of your soul.Without these small tests,if they be events, illnesses or relationships, life would be like a smoothly paved, straight, flat road to nowhere.Safe and comfortable but dull and utterly pointless.

The people you meet who affect your life and the successes and downfalls you experience-they are the ones who create who you are.Even the bad experiences can be learned from. Those lessons are the hardest and probably the most important ones.

If someone hurts you, betrays you or breaks your heart, forgive them for they have helped you learn about trust and the importance of being cautious to whom you open your heart to.If someone loves you, love them back unconditionally, not only because they love you,but because they are teaching you to love and opening your heart and eyes to things you would have never seen or felt without them.

Make every day count.Appreciate every moment and take from it everything that you possibly can,for you may never be able to experience it again.

Talk to people you have never talked to before, and actually listen.Let yourself fall in love, break free and set your sights high.Hold your head up because you have every right to.Tell yourself you are a great individual and believe in yourself, for if you dont believe in yourself,no one else will believe in you either. You can make of your life anything you wish.Create your own life and then go out and live it.

"People are like tea bags-you have to put them in hot water before you know how strong they are."
