  1. It all depends.

  表示某事或某情况还没有决定,得看情况而定,意为:这很难说,那要看情况。如:

  今天我们要讲的三个习惯用语里都有bell这个单词。 Bell就是一个铃,或者是敲的钟。

  1. ring a bell 使人回忆起(听起来熟悉)

  Ring a bell里的ring是个动词,意思是敲钟,或者是打铃。 作为一个习惯用语,ring a bell就是:你听到或看到的事让你想起某个人,或者想起过去发生的某件事。

  比如说,下面例句里说话的这个人正跟一个朋友在马路上走。他看到对马路的一个女子,他觉得脸很熟。突然,他想起来她是谁了。于是他对他的朋友说:

  这个习惯用语是来自拳击运动。比赛时负责计算时间的人一打铃就表示一个回合的开始,再打铃表示这个回合结束。当一个拳击手被对方打倒在地的时候,裁判员就站在边上,对着他开始慢慢地从一数到十。

  要是计算时间的人在裁判员还没有数到十的时候打铃表示这场回合的时间已到,比赛就在短暂休息后再继续进行。这就是saved by the bell这个习惯用语的出处。到1950年左右,这个习惯用语就被一般人采用,包括那些从来没有看过拳击的人。
