　　一封特殊的信 A special letter

　　Dear World:

　　亲爱的世界：

　　My son starts school today.

　　我的儿子今天就要开始上学读书了。

　　It's going to be strange and new to him for a while, and I wish you would sort of treat him gently.

　　一时之间，他会感觉陌生而又新鲜。我希望你能待他温柔一些。

　　You see, up to now, he's been king of the roost.

　　This morning, he's going to walk down the front steps, wave his hand and start on his great adventure that will probably include wars and tragedy and sorrow.

　　To live his life in the world he has to live in will require faith and love and courage.

　　Teach him it is far more honorable to fail than to cheat.

　　我的小天使My Little Angel

　　I had offered to watch my 3－year－old daughter， Ramanda， so that my wife could go out with a friend． I was getting some work done while Ramanda appeared to be having a good time in the other room． No problem， I figured． But then it got a little too quiet and I yelled out， "What are you doing， Ramanda?" No response． I repeated my question and heard her say， "Oh．．．nothing．" Nothing? What does "nothing" mean?

　　我主动提出照看我3岁的女儿，Ramanda，以便妻子能和她的朋友出去逛逛。我在做些事，此时Ramanda似乎在另一个房间玩得也很开心。我知道，没什么问题。突然间一点动静都没有了，于是我喊道：“Ramanda，你在干什么？”没有回答。我重复问了几次，这时听她说道：“没什么”，“没什么？那是什么意思？”

　　I got up from my desk and ran out into the living room， whereupon（于是） I saw her take off down the hall． I chased her up the stairs and watched her as her little behind made a hard left into the bedroom． I was gaining on her！ She took off for the bathroom． Bad move． I had her cornered． I told her to turn around． She refused． I pulled out my big， mean， authoritative Daddy voice， "Young lady， I said turn around！"

　　我从桌旁起身跑进起居室，我看见她溜到客厅，我追到楼梯上看到她的小背影跑进卧室，我正要靠近她，她又跑到了洗漱室。真晕。我在墙角处逮到了她，我让她转身，她不从。于是我用威严的父亲的那种声调说道“小姐，我命令你转身。”

　　Slowly， she turned toward me． In her hand was what was left of my wife's new lipstick（口红，唇膏）． And every square inch of her face was covered with bright red （except her lips of course）！

　　慢慢地，她转过身，手里拿着我妻子的新口红。她的脸上涂满了明亮的红色（除了嘴唇）。

　　As she looked up at me with fearful eyes， lips trembling， I heard every voice that had been shouted to me as a child． "How could you．．．You should know better than that．．．How many times have you been told．．．What a bad thing to do．．．" It was just a matter of my picking out which old message I was going to use on her so that she would know what a bad girl she had been． But before I could let loose（释放，屈服）， I looked down at the sweatshirt my wife had put on her only an hour before． In big letters it said， "I'M A PERFECT LITTLE ANGEL！" I looked back up into her tearful eyes and instead of seeing a bad girl who didn't listen， I saw a child of God．．．a perfect little angel full of worth， value and a wonderful spontaneity（自发性） that I had come dangerously close to shaming out of her．

　　当她用惊慌的眼神抬头看着我时，她的嘴唇在颤抖，我听见了那些应对小孩说的`话“你怎么能……你应该知道……告诉你多少次了……你做了见多糟糕的事……”现在只需要选句常说的老话来警告她，以便让她知道自己有多坏。但是在我说这些话之前，我低头看见了妻子一个小时前让她穿上的运动衫，上面用很大的字母写着“我是个完美的小天使”，我回头看见了她眼中的泪水，这次我看到的不是一个坏女孩，而是上帝的女儿……一个有价值，很自主的完美小天使，我险些让她蒙羞而使她丧失这些品质。

　　"Sweetheart， you look beautiful！ Let's take a picture so Mommy can see how special you look．" I took the picture and thanked God that I didn't miss the opportunity to reaffirm what a perfect little angel he had given me．

　　“宝贝，你看起来漂亮极了，我们拍张照让妈妈来看看你看起来有多特别”，我给她拍了照片，感谢上帝，我没有错失赞美小天使的机会，她是上帝赐予我的。

　　青涩的青春

　　Man's youth is a wonderful thing： it is so full of anguish and of magic and he never comes to know it as it is， until it has gone from him forever． It is the thing he cannot bear to lose， it is the thing whose passing he watches with infinite sorrow and regret， it is the thing whose loss with a sad and secret joy， the thing he would never willingly relive again， could it be restored to him by any magic．

　　青春奇妙无穷，充满魅力，充满痛楚．青春年少的时候根本不知青春为何物，直到青春一去不复返了才对青春有了真正的认识．谁都想让青春永驻，不忍青春离去；眼睁睁地看着青春流逝，心中会涌起无穷的忧伤和惋惜；青春的失去是人们永远感到悲哀的事；青春的失去是人们真正觉得悲喜交集的事；即便奇迹出现青春复苏，谁都不会心甘情愿重度青春的岁月。

　　Why is this? The reason is that the strange and bitter miracle of life is nowhere else so evident as in our youth． And what is the essence of that strange and bitter miracle of life which we feel so poignant， so unutterable， with such a bitter pain and joy， when we are young? It is this： that being rich， we are so poor； that being mighty， we can yet have nothing； that seeing， breathig， smelling， tasting all around us the impossible wealth and glory of this earth， feeling with an intolerable certitude that the whole structure of the enchanted life – the most fortunate， wealthy， good， and happy life that any man has ever known – is ours – is ours at once， immediately and forever， the moment that we choose to take a step， or stretch a hand， or say a word－ we yet know that we can really keep， hold， take， and possess forever－ nothing． All passes； nothing lasts： the moment that we put our hand upon it ， it melts away like smoke， is gone forever， and the snake is eating at our heart again； we see then what we are and what our lives must come to．

　　为什么如此?因为在青春时代，生活充满了奇特而辛酸的不可思议的事．我们在青春年少时带着悲喜交集的心情，十分强烈而不可名状地感受到人生的奇特辛酸/不可思议的经历．其实质是什么呢?其实质是这样的：青春年少的时候，虽然殷实富足，却非常贫穷；虽然力气强大，却一无所有；世间的富贵荣华触目皆是，简直可以呼吸到，闻到嗅到，还可以品尝到，心中的自信按捺不住，深切地感受到整个被陶醉了的生活——人类迄今为止所直到的最幸运/最富有的美好幸福的生活，只要我们决定向前迈步，奋发努力，便立即归我们所有了，并将永远属于我们．然而，我们知道，我们真的永远不能抓到什么，永远不能获得什么，永远不能占有什么．一切匆匆过去，荡然无存．我们一出手它就烟消云散，飘然而去，一去不复返了．于是，心中泛起阵阵隐痛，看到了自己真实的面孔，看到了自己未来生活的必然走向。

　　A young man is so strong， so mad， so certain， and so lost． He has everything and he is able to use nothing． He hurls the great shoulder of his strength forever against phantasmal barriers， he is a wave whose power explodes in lost mid – oceans under timeless skies， here－aches out to grip a fume of painted smoke， he wants all， feels the thirst and power foreverything， and finally gets nothing． In the end， he is destroyed by his own strength， devoured by his own hunger， impoverished by his own wealth． Thoughtless of money or the accumulation of material possessions， he is none the less defeated in the end by his own greed a greed that makes the avarice of King Midas seem paltry by comparison．

　　青年人非常坚强，狂热自信，但容易迷惘混沌，虽然机缘无数，却把握不住，虽然身强体壮，试图冲破重重虚幻的屏障，却如同一个波浪，最终还是无力地消失在旷远浩淼的大海中央，他伸出手想要抓住斑斓的云烟，他想得到世间的万物，渴望主宰一切，最终却是一无所获．最后，他被自己的力量所毁灭，被自己的饥饿所吞食，被自己的财富弄得贫穷潦倒．他对金钱或财富的积累不以为意漫不经心，然而最终还是被自己的贪欲所吞噬。

　　And that is the reason why， when youth is gone， every man will look back upon that period of his life with infinite sorrow and regret． It is the bitter sorrow and regret of a man who knows that once he had a great talent and wasted it ， of a man who knows that once he had a great treasure and got nothing from it ， of a man who knows that he had strength enough for everything and never used it．

　　青春消逝，蓦然回首，无论是谁，心中都会充满无尽的忧伤，充满无穷的懊悔．曾经才智卓越，却白白浪费了，曾经财富殷实，却一无所有，曾经本事高强，却从未利用．一个认识到自己失落青春的人回忆起来总是充满悲伤和懊悔。

　　关于获得成功

　　We cannot travel every path． Success must be won along one line．We must make our business the one life purpose to which every other must be subordinate（服从）．

　　我们不可能把每条路都走一遍。必须执着于一条道路才能获得成功。我们必须有一个终生追求的目标，其他的则从属于这个目标。

　　I hate a thing done by halves（不完全的）． If it be right, do it boldly．If it be wrong， leave it undone．

　　我痛恨做事半途而废。如果这件事是对的，就大胆勇敢地去做；如果这件事不对，就不要去做。

　　The men of history were not perpetually（不断地） looking into the mirror to make sure of their own size． Absorbed in their work they did it． They did it so well that the wondering world sees them to be great， and labeled them accordingly．

　　历史长河中的伟人并不是靠终日瞻观镜中的自己来衡量自身的形象的。他们的形象来自对事业全身心的投入与追求。他们是如此的卓越超凡，于是芸芸众生觉得他们很伟大，并因此称他们为伟人。

　　To live with a high ideal is a successful life． It is not what one does， but what one tries to do， that makes a man strong． “Eternal vigilance，” it has been said， “is the price of liberty．” With equal truth it may be said， “Unceasing effort is the price of success．” If we do not work with our might， others will； and they will outstrip（超过） us in the race， and pluck the prize from our grasp．

　　为崇高的理想而活着是一种成功的生活。使人变强大的，不是这个人做了什么，而是他努力尝试去做什么。有人说过，“恒久的警惕是自由的代价”，那同样也可以说，“不懈的努力是成功的代价。”倘若我们不尽全力工作，别人会尽全力，随后他们将在竞争中超越我们，从我们手中夺取胜利的果实。

　　Success grows less and less dependent on luck and chance．Self－distrust is the cause of most of our failures．

　　The great and indispensable help to success is character． Character is a crystallized habit， the result of training and conviction． Every character is influenced by heredity， environment and education． But these apart， if every man were not to be a great extent the architect of his own character， he would be a fatalist， and irresponsible creature of circumstances．

　　性格是取得成功不可或缺的重要助力。性格是一种固化成形的习惯，是不断培养并坚信于此的结果。每个人的性格都会受到遗传因素、环境和教育的影响。但除此之外，如果人在很大程度上不能成为自己性格的构筑者，那么他就会沦为宿命论者，从而成为环境的失败造物。

　　Instead of saying that man is a creature of circumstance， it would be nearer the mark to say that man is the architect of circumstance． From the same materials one man builds palaces， another hovel． Bricks and mortar are mortar and bricks， until the architect can make them something else．

　　与其说人是环境的造物，不如说人是环境的建筑师更贴切些。同样的材料，有人能用其建造出宫殿，而有人只能建成简陋的小屋。在建筑师将其变成他物之前，砖泥依然是砖泥。

　　The true way to gain much is never to desire to gain too much．

　　想得到的多就永远不要奢望太多。

　　Wise men don't care for what they can't have．

　　友情和爱情的区别

　　Both are so much related to each other． And both are so dissimilar！ What are the differences between friendship and love? Is platonic friendship possible between persons of opposite sex? Let us try and understand．

　　两者联系是如此密切，两者却又那么截然不同。友情和爱情有什么区别?异性朋友间的理想化的友谊真的存在吗?我们来试着理解下。

　　What is friendship? Why do we call a person our friend? When do we call someone a very good friend? If we care for a person， if we are always ready to help that person and if we share most of our thoughts with a person， they are our good friends． We can always count upon our good friends in an emergency． We are always sure that our friend will understand why we acted in a certain way． We need not explain anything to our very good friends． The friendship is so deep and the relationship is so intimate， that most of the things are automatically understood by our friends．

　　什么是友情?为什么我们管一个人叫“朋友”?什么时候我们管一个人叫作“好朋友”?如果我们关心一个人，我们总是准备帮助那个人；如果我们和某个人分享大部分的想法，那个人一定是我们的好朋友。在紧急情况下我们总是依靠好朋友。我们总是确定好友会理解我们行事的方式。我们不需要向亲密的朋友解释什么。友情如此深，关系如此牢，以致于朋友间的事双方都会很自然地理解。

　　What about love? In a relationship of deep love， all the sharing that we discussed above are taken for granted． But love transcends all this． During love， we are attached with a particular person， while in friendship， one may have many friends． A loving relationship makes one so much attached to the other， that one gets pained if his/her beloved is hurt！ Love also involves a physical element． Friendship does not have that． This is a vital difference． Nature gives us love so that the specie can go forward． Nature does not give us friendship．

　　什么是爱情?在深爱中，上面我们讨论的事情都是理所当然的。但是爱情远远超过这些。恋爱中，我们总是和某个人关系密切。但是在友情中，一个人可能有很多朋友。恋爱的两个人联系得如此紧密，如果他/她受到了伤害，另一个人也会心痛。爱情总会有身体上的接触。友情却没有。这是至关重要的区别。上苍给予了我们爱情，以使种族延续。但是上苍却没有给我们友情。

　　Your heart beats will never increase in anticipation of meeting your friend． You will not lie awake at night thinking about your friend． You will not feel totally lost， if you don't meet your friend for a few days． You will not have dreams in your eyes thinking about your friend． But in love， you will do all this and much more． Indeed， there is no comparison between love and friendship．

　　在盼朋友出现时，你的心跳不会增加；你不会夜不能寐地想着你的朋友；如果几天没见到朋友，你也不会完全迷失；想到朋友时，你的眼中不会有梦想。但是在恋爱中，这一切你都会做而且程度会更深。确实，爱情和友情没有可比性。
