Louis Armstrong had two famous nicknames. Some people called him Bagamo. They said his mouth looked like a large bag. Musicians often called him Pops, as a sign of respect for his influence on the world of music.

Born in 1901 in New Orleans, he grew up poor, but lived among great musicians. Jazz was invented in the city a few years before his birth. Armstrong often said,“Jazz and I grew up together.”

Armstrong showed a great talent for music when he was taught to play the cornet(短号) at a boy’s home. In his late teens, Armstrong began to live the life of a musician. He played in parades, clubs, and on the steam-boats that travelled on the Mississippi River. At that time, New Orleans was famous for the new music of jazz and was home to many great musicians. Armstrong learned from the older musicians and soon became respected as their equal.

In 1922 he went to Chicago. There, the tale of Louis Armstrong begins. From then until the end of his life, Armstrong was celebrated and loved wherever he went. Armstrong had no equal when it came to playing the American popular song.

His cornet playing had a deep humanity(仁爱) and warmth that caused many listeners to say,“Listening to Pops just makes you feel good all over.”He was the father of the jazz style and also one of the best-known and most-admired people in the world. When people want to know about the weather, they usually go to their radios, TVs, newspapers, or to the Internet. However, you can also find many weather signs among wildlife, because of their highly developed senses. Drops in air pressure produce an effect on small animals in many ways. Mice and deer are good weather indicators. People who spend a lot of time outdoors have observed that, before a storm, field mice come out of their holes and run around. Deer leave high ground and come down from the mountains.

Birds are especially good weather indicators because they also show the effect of a pressure drop in many ways. For example, some birds become irritable(急躁的) and quarrelsome and will fight over a piece of bread. Other birds chirp(叽叽喳喳) and sing just before a storm. It seems they know they won’t get another chance for an hour or two. Birds also seek safe places before a storm. You will sometimes see birds settling in trees or gathering together on a wire close to a building. Pre-storm low pressure makes the air so thin that birds have difficulty flying.

It is unusual to see many birds flying overhead in the summertime, rather than during the periods in the spring or autumn. Watch for other weather signs if you see this. If they fly in the wrong direction, they may be flying ahead of a storm.

By paying closer attention to some important signs in nature, we can become better prepared for any kind of weather.

  60. The word“indicators”in Paragraph I probably means .

  A. maps B. services C. signs D. stations

  A. Signs of a Storm B. Drops in Air Pressure

  C. Animals’Sharp Senses D. Nature’s Weather Signs

When former American President Bill Clinton travelled to South Korea to visit President Kim Young Sam, he repeatedly referred to the Korean president’s wife as Mrs. Kim. By mistake, President Clinton’s advisers thought that Koreans have the same naming customs as the Japanese. Clinton had not been told that, in Korea, wives keep their family names. President Kim Young Sam’s wife was named Sohn Myong Suk. Therefore she should be addressed as Mrs. Sohn.

President Clinton arrived in Korea directly after leaving Japan and had not changed his culture gears. His failure to follow Korean customs gave the impression that Korea was not as important to him as Japan.

In addition to Koreans, some Asian husbands and wives do not share the same family names. This practice often puzzles English-speaking teachers when talking with a pupil’s parents. They become puzzled about the student’s correct last name. Placing the family name first is common among a number of Asian cultures.

Mexican naming customs are different as well, When a woman marries, she keeps her family name and adds her husband’s name after the word de (of). This affects how they fill in forms in the United States. When requested to fill in a middle name, they generally write the father’s family name. But Mexicans are addressed by the family name of the mother. This often causes puzzlement.

Here are a few ways to deal with such difficult situations: don’t always think that a married woman uses her husband’s last name, Remember that in many Asian cultures , the order of first and last names is reversed(颠倒). Ask which name a person would prefer to use .If the name is difficult to pronounce, admit it, and ask the person to help you say it correctly.

  64. The story of Bill Clinton is used to .

  B. uses her husband’s given name

  C. shares her husband’s family name

  D. adds her husband’s given name to hers

  67. To address a married woman properly, you’d better .

  A. use her middle name B. use her husband’s first name

Certainly no creature in the sea is stranger than the common sea cucumber(海参). All living creatures, especially human beings, have their features, but everything about the little sea cucumber seems unusual. What else can be said about an unusual animal that eats mud, feeds almost continuously day and night but can live without eating for long periods, and can be poisonous but is considered eatable?

For some fifty million years, in spite of all its strange features, the sea cucumber has lived on its diet of mud. It is adaptable enough to live attached to rocks by its tube feet, under rocks in shallow water, or on the surface of mud flats. Common in cool water on both Atlantic and Pacific shores, it has the ability to suck up mud or sand and digest whatever nutrients are present.

Sea cucumbers come in a variety of colors, ranging from black to reddish-brown to sand-color and nearly white. One form even has vivid purple tentacles(触须). Usually the creature are cucumber-shaped —where their name comes from — and because they live in rocks, this shape, combined with flexibility, enables them to press into crevices(岩石缝隙)where they are safe from animal eater and ocean currents.

Although they have greedy desire for food, eating day and night, sea cucumbers have the ability to become still and live at a low metabolic(新陈代谢)rate — feeding a little or not at all for long periods, so that the living things in the ocean that provide their food have a chance to increase by a large amount. If it were not for this natural ability, they would swallow all the food available in a short time and would probably starve themselves out of existence.

But the most impressive thing about the sea cucumber is the way it defends itself. Its major enemies are fish and crabs. When attacked, it forces all its internal organs (内脏)in its body out into water. It also removes attached structures such as tentacles. The sea cucumber will get rid of its organs and grow itself again if it is attacked or even touched; it will do the same if the surrounding water temperature is too high or if the water becomes too polluted.

71.According to the passage, why is the shape of sea cucumbers important?

A.It makes them attractive to fish.

B.It helps them to digest their food.

C.It helps them to protect themselves from danger.

D.It makes it easier for them to move through the mud.

72.The fourth paragraph of the passage mainly discusses .

A.the eating habits of sea cucumbers

B.the food sources of sea cucumbers

  C.the reproduction of sea cucumbers

D.the danger to sea cucumbers’ existence

73.What can be inferred about the defense system of the sea cucumber?

A.They are similar to those of most sea creatures.

B.They are very sensitive to the surroundings.

  C.They require group cooperation.

  D.They are almost useless.

74.Which of the following would NOT cause a sea cucumber to give away its internal organs into the water?

  A.Touch. B.Food. C.Temperature. D.Pollution.

75.The best title of the passage is“ ”.

  A.The Variety of Sea Cucumbers

  B.The Sources of Sea Cucumbers

  C.The Similarity of Sea

The first thing we can do is to make our campus more beautiful. Every one of us may plant a tree in the school, or organize a thorough cleaning on the campus. We can also form a good habit of putting the rubbish in the garbage can.

The second thing we can do is to protect the facilities in our school. When we leave the classroom, we should never forget to turn off the light or close the door. We should not leave the tap water running or waste any materials in the laboratory class.

If everyone does one thing for our school, I believe we will turn our school into a better place to study and live in.

  Thank you for listening!

M:The yellow River is our“Mother River”, but nowadays nearly four-fifths of the Yellow River is polluted, according to the report of China News Service on Tuesday.

W: That’s terrible. According to a water quality test in 1975, water quality is qualified for drinking water, fishery and swimming. By the end of 1990s, the percentage of qualified water had been lowered to 40 percent.

M:And what’s worse, this March, a government report said as much as 72.3 percent of the water in the Yellow River has dropped below the 3rd kind.

W:What results will it cause, if we don’t take measures at once?

M:It is said that the economic loss caused by pollution of the Yellow River annually totaled about 11.5 billion to 15.6 billion yuan (about 1.39 billion to 1.89 billion US dollars). Since 1993, the Yellow River has witnessed more than 40 pollution incidents.

W:By the way, why is the Yellow River seriously polluted so far?

M:Experts indicated that the rapid increase of the sewage, the unqualified waste water and the misuse of fertilizer all worsened the situation of the water body, which led to the decline of the water quality.

W:Would you please say something about the river?

M:OK. The 5, 464-kilometer Yellow River runs through nine provinces and autonomous regions and enters the Bohai Sea in north China, forming a valley of 752,000 square kilometers and watering 12 percent of China’s 1.3 billion population and 15 percent of farmland. However, excessive development has resulted in serious shortage of water resources. The water resources development along the Yellow River valley is as high as 70 percent, much higher than the internationally recognized warning level of 40 percent.

W:In my opinion,we’d better write an article about our“Mother River”to the newspaper, which will draw people’s attention.

M:That’s a good idea. Let’s do it now.
