Task One
Study results were released today for a three-year study conducted by the University of New
York looking at workplace efficiency. The study included interviews involving about 1,500
participants throughout Europe and North America. Scientists leading the study are reporting that
their results indicate that companies using flexible working hours have a huge advantage over
their competitors in productivity and efficiency.
About half of the employees in the study worked for employers that required them to work a
set schedule. These employees used only 42 percent of their working hours to work for their
companies. On the other hand, workers at companies that allowed them to choose their own
working hours used about 80 percent of their time in the office productively, an increase of almost
100 percent.
56. What is the main idea of the study mentioned in the article?
MEMORANDUM
To: Rose Goss, Personnel Manager
From: Part Brown, Vice President
Re: An interesting article
Hi Rose,
I just read this article in Business World Magazine about a study on efficiency. I thought it
might be useful to discuss the data presented in the article during our next strategy meeting.
It seems to me that this system of employees choosing their own hours would not be too
difficult to use here. It may help us with some of the productivity problems we’ve been
having. It would also probably be very popular with the employees. Finally, it could really
help us to save money. Since our revenues aren’t likely to increase this year, this could push
our profit.
Please read the article and let me know what you think before the meeting.
Thanks!

B. Employees do not want to have to pick their own hours.

A. To ask if he has already read an article
B. To show him a book he might enjoy
C. To let him know she wrote an article
D. To ask his opinion about information in an article
58. About how much more productive are employees with flexible schedules?
A. 80% more productive
B. Twice as productive
C. 42% more productive
D. 100 times as productive
59. Which benefit of a new scheduling system does Part NOT mention?

z You will hear the ten recordings twice.
1.
F: I’d like some advice about my investment in HDC. I was hoping for six per cent but
it didn’t even repeat last year’s five point five per cent.
M: Well, five per cent’s not all that bad the way things are at the moment. A lot of
companies are giving far less.
2.
F: Good morning. I’m from HDC International.
M: Good morning. Welcome to our company. Can I help you?
F: I’d like to see your Marketing Manager, Mr. Adamson.
M: Just a moment. I will telephone him to come.
F: Thank you.
M: I am sorry. He is in a meeting right now. Can you wait for a few minutes?
F: Of course. Thank you.
3.
F: When are those goods arriving?
M: Well, they sent them on Tuesday and it normally takes 4 working days.
F: But Friday was a bank holiday.
M: Yes, so they should be here on Saturday then.
4.
F: Have you finished getting the information about best performance yet? I’d like to
use it at tomorrow’s meeting if possible.
M: Nearly. The data on individual sales personnel isn’t all in yet.
F: What about product categories? That’s more important.
M: No problem with that, or with the highest performing outlets. I’ve put the figures on
your desk.
F: Thanks.

Questions 11 – 15
z Listen to the recording about part of a job interview.
z For questions (11-15), mark one (A, B or C) for the correct answer.
z You will hear the conversation twice.
F: OK, let’s get started. Tell me about yourself first.
M: Well, I've always been passionate about sales. I always think that everyone in the
organization must be sales-focused. We should provide support to the sales team and our
customers. Without sales, the rest of us would not have a job. I look forward to helping
you drive sales in any way possible.
F: OK, that’s nice to hear. Why do you want to join us?
M: I know JKL is a large company, which has a good reputation. The work will be more
challenging, and I would have more scope and opportunity in your company so that I can
use my initiative.
F: Now, what is your goal for the next five years?
M: I see myself in sales. In five years’ time, I think I will have achieved a lot if you give me
an opportunity to work for you. Specifically, I hope I will become one of the best
salespeople in your company.
F: How do you manage stress in your daily work?
M: I plan ahead and manage my time well. I get along well with my colleagues. I also have a
personal rule that stops me from reacting to any problems until I feel calm about it.
F: Are you most productive working alone or in a group?
M: I need some private time for planning, but otherwise I like the activity and noise of
people around me, and I like sharing ideas. I’m a good team player.
F: What salary do you have in mind?
M: I’m aware of the range in the marketplace. I’m sure you’ll come up with a most
appropriate offer that will be based on my background and ability.

M: They are mainly responsible for promoting our products in the northern region.
F: How much holiday do they have every year? The usual 15 days a year?

M: Yes, it’s HD zero seven zero double two.
F: Right. We’ll advertise next week, September. What start date shall I put? The 9th of

Section D
Questions 21 – 25
z You will hear part of a presentation by the advisor from a job-advising center.
z For each question (21-25), fill in the missing information in the numbered space using one or
two words.
z You will hear the recording twice.
Dress properly. Formal clothes are better than flashy or casual clothes. You want the employer to
look at you, not your clothes. Be neat and clean, with hair combed and shoes shined.
Be on time. Being on time, or even a few minutes early; demonstrate to the interviewer you can
be punctual. If you are late for your interview, your chances of getting the job are hurt.
Use good manners. Stand until invited to be seated. Do not smoke or chew gum. Sit up straight
and be alert. Be sure to thank the interviewer for the meeting.
Listen. The employer knows more about the job and the business than you do, so let him or her
do most of the talking. Listen to the questions and statements and let them determine what you
say or how you respond.
Speak clearly and confidently. Think about what you are going to say before you speak. Take
time to cover all points, answers, and questions completely.
Don’t criticize others. If you are asked about a previous colleague or employer, say something
positive.
4
Don’t be afraid. Most interviewers are patient and considerate. Be confident. You have
something to offer. Remember – the employer is looking for good workers, and you are looking
for a good job opportunity.
Keep your courage. If you don’t get the job, accept the fact that the job was probably not suited
for you or you for the company. If you made a good impression in the interview, the employer
may refer you to another employer or put your name down for future reference if another job
opportunity becomes available.
