There has been a worrying trend that children watch an excessive amount of television and do not engage much in active or creative activities. This trend can be ascribed to a number of reasons and it must be addressed by definite actions.

Reasons for the trend vary. The primary reason is that children’s television programmes are being broadcast all day with addictive contents, such as vivid and colourful animations. Cartoon Network and Disney Channel with their all-day-long series of animation shows are an evident example of this. Another clear reason is that parents nowadays are busy with their work, so they want children to focus on an activity that does not require much of their attention such as watching television. These two reasons make children spend more time in front of the television screen; this sedentary lifestyle prevents them from participating in active or creative activities.

A number of strong measures must be implemented to tackle the issue. The first solution is limiting the amount of time that a child can watch television. This could be done by activating the parental control mode and setting a fixed operating time limit on their television set. Another feasible solution is that parents must spend more time with their children and together they could engage in outdoor or creative activities. For example, parents could form a family sport team that practices on a regular basis, which may appeal to children more than television.

To conclude, there are obvious reasons why children watch too much television and spend little time on active and creative activities. This negative trend could be tackled by a number of remedies, such as activating the parental control mode on television sets.

The table compares the percentages of people using different functions of their mobile phones between 2006 and 2010.?

Throughout the period shown, the main reason why people used their mobile phones was to make calls. However, there was a marked increase in the popularity of other mobile phone features, particularly the Internet search feature.

In 2006, 100% of mobile phone owners used their phones to make calls, while the next most popular functions were text messaging (73%) and taking photos (66%). By contrast, less than 20% of owners played games or music on their phones, and there were no figures for users doing Internet searches or recording video.

Over the following 4 years, there was relatively little change in the figures for the top three mobile phone features. However, the percentage of people using their phones to access the Internet jumped to 41% in 2008 and then to 73% in 2010. There was also a significant rise in the use of mobiles to play games and to record video, with figures reaching 41% and 35% respectively in 2010.

Some people think that visitors to other countries should imitate local customs and behaviors. Other people disagree. They think that the host country should welcome different cultures.

What is your point of view on the issue?

The shifting of the term a melting pot, a traditional way of understanding Americas identity into a salad bowl, now preferred by many minority groups, who have worked to preserve the distinct culture of their group shows, in my opinion, the view of multiculturalism deep rooted among the people.

People of one culture who move to a country where another culture dominates may feel confused when they deal with people there. This kind of cultural shock usually passes if a person stays in a new culture long enough to understand it and get used to its ways. Some of them may also give up their old ways and imitate local customs and behaviors. In a multicultural society, however, assimilation does not always occur.

A multicultural society, on the other hand, supports the view that many distinct cultures are good and desirable. In the United States, for instance, millions of people speak both English and the language of their own culture. They eat both American foods, such as apple pie and ethnic food. They celebrate both national holidays Fourth of July and their ethnic holidays. In Chinese communities across the United States, parades and other festivities mark the Chinese New Year.

Wild animals have no place in the 21st century, and the protection is a waste of resources.

To what extent do you agree or disagree?

The current global extinction crisis is one of the greatest challenges posed by the rapid expansion of human populations. The protection of endangered species, as far as I can see, should be a top priority for three main reasons: economic value, scientific value, and survival value.

Wild animals provide many valuable substances, such as meat, skins and furs. The financial value of wild species is important to the economies of many nations. In many countries the recreational viewing of animals at zoos is also a source of revenue.

The study of wildlife, on the other hand, provides valuable knowledge about various life processes. Such study has helped scientists understand how the human body functions and why people behave as they do. Scientists have also gained medical knowledge and discovered important medical products by studying wildlife. In addition, by observing the effect of environmental pollution on wild animals, scientists have learned how pollution affects human life.

Furthermore, every species of wildlife plays a role in helping maintain the balanced, living systems of the Earth. These systems must continue to function if life is to survive. Thus, the loss of any species can threaten the survival of all life, including human beings.

This paper aims to express a personal opinion in relation to a meaningful communication and the importance of the traditional letter writing skill rather than using mobile phones and computers.

In this age, people tend to try getting their message across to others by quicker means like short message service via mobile phones or instant messages on the computers. Admittedly, these are more custom made for the times we live in, in that, it provides the ease of convenience and saves a lot of time particularly considering the ever growing workloads we deal with the need for time. On the other hand, we must accept that these modes of communication are not an effective replacement for the more traditional ones like letter writing. Are we humans totally controlled by the technology and will we one day forget how warm and touching it is to be communicated by personal letters from our family and dear friends?

Notwithstanding the use of instant communication technology to communicate with others, it does not mean that traditional letters writing skill will disappear completely. There are doctors, solicitors, academics, writers and so on, who will still be involved with this traditional way for communication. The only downside we can see is that increasing reliance on mobile phones and computers for writing messages will decrease our spelling skills.

Unemployment is getting increasingly serious in many countries. Some people think students only need to get primary education, while others think secondary education is necessary. Whats your opinion?

More serious unemployment across the world cannot be denied. There are probably many reasons for this, but the main reason is the limited knowledge or skills of some workers. It seems that most of employers prefer the employees who have had enough information along with skills to the people who earn a living at the cost of physical labors.

I would like to say that children should be encouraged to accept more secondary and even higher education. It is well aware that a good education can improve their quality and competitiveness . Because many students have been given high-quality education or useful training, they have had more opportunities to get in some reputable companies or Government departments.Furthermore, most of them are more likely to get promoted and development in the end.

However, other people argue that students only need to get primary education. They probably think that children cannot find a job even when they get in higher education. However, the students cannot take advantage with the people who have had a good education if they do not get more education. Knowledge and education seems to be the key to find a good job in the society that is competitive.

Some people say that older people should live with their adult children. Others say that they shouldnt. Which do you think is good practice.

One of the topics in daily life is whether or not the older people should live with their adult children. My answer is the question is that it is better for them not to.

Firstly, people of different ages have different ways of life. The old people like a quiet, peaceful and regular life whereas the young prefer noises, activities and unrestrained enjoyment. If they live together, old may feel that they are always disturbed and the young may feel that they are often handicapped.

Secondly, people of different generations have different views and values. What is quite normal to the parents may seem to be old-fashioned or wrong to the children. When they live together, they may disagree on matters ranging from minor domestic matters to national and international issues. Consequently, family life may be unpleasant or even unbearable to both the old and the young.

Last but not the least, adult children, like their parents, love independence and freedom, but their parents still take them as children and unintentionally interfere in their affairs. The situation will be worse if the adult children are already married. In this case, the children have already built a new and closed world and any outside interference may lead to conflicts.

Every human society has a culture that includes arts, customs, language, etc. Every culture changes and the main causes for losing varieties in language and culture, in my opinion, are: contact with other cultures, and development of science and technology.

When two cultures have continuous contact with each other, the two cultures may blend or adopt their cultural traits, such as language, clothing, etc. thus losing their individual cultural varieties.

When people of one culture who move to a country where another culture dominates may give up their old ways and become part of the dominant culture. For example, groups of people from many countries have settled in the United States. Most of these people gradually abandoned the way of life of their homeland, and adopted an American way of life. They learned the language, adopted the customs, and followed the traditions.

The development of science and technology, on the other hand, may attribute to changes in a culture. The invention of steam engine, for example, produced great changes in the way people lived.

The invention of the computer in the mid 20th century has also had enormous impact. It has brought far-reaching changes in communication, education, entertainment, and numerous other areas of modern life.

The progression of globalization is inevitable and undeniable. It has been widely noted that many of the worlds languages and cultures are dying out. To seek the solution, we should take a closer look at the causes first.

Most important of all is the objective reason. The essence of globalization is commercialization and centralization. It is convenient in communication that some prevalent languages and cultures have its predominance, which makes superior of the senior and inferiority of the junior. That leads to deterioration of some minors. These languages and cultures will be overlooked and devalued until they completely die out.

As concave and convex sides of a nutshell, it has subjective reason. With the burgeoning of some VIPs, many migrants have swarmed into the dreamlands due to economic drive and stimulation, meanwhile engaged in local culture perspective and discarding their native languages and cultures as a betrayal.

The graph shows the percentage of radio and television audiences over 4 years old in the UK throughout the day from October to December 1992. The figure reveals that before 2:00 pm there were more radio audiences, while after 2:00 pm more people turned to television. There was a gap of 10% between radio and television audiences.

The data indicates that radio listeners increased substantially before 8:00 am, when the percentage reached to a peak of 27%.

The percentage then declined steadily to 11% at 4:00 pm, which was followed by a slight increase to 15% at 5:00 pm.

However, from then on, there was again a gradual decrease to 2% until 4:00 am, when the percentage bottomed out. The period from 4:00 am to 6:00 am saw another slight rise to 4% in radio listeners.

As for TV viewers, the percentage went up from 6:00 am to 8:30 am, when there was a leveling off at 8% until 10:00 am

After a slight decrease, the percentage rose sharply to 15% between 12 pm and 2 pm, before it dropped slightly.

The peak was reached at 8:00 pm after a massive rise from 14% since 3:00 pm.

However, the period between 8:00 pm and 3:00 am saw a slump in television viewers. The percentage reached the bottom of 3% at 3:00 am, when there was a slight rise afterwards.

Children who grow up in families which are short of money are better prepared to deal with the problems of adult life than children who are brought up by wealthy parents. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Some feel that the children of low income families are better equipped to deal with difficulties posed by the real world when they grow up and they also believe the privileged children of wealthy families are less fit to deal with these difficulties . The implications and veracity of this argument seem self-evident, but in fact require closer examination.

The popular wisdom is that children of poorer families learn early on the value of a buck, and are thus naturally better suited to stretching moneywhen times get tough in adulthood. Inversely, the children of wealthy families, thoseborn with a silver spoon in their mouths, are believed to be completely ignorant of the value of money, having had everything provided for them in their youth and oftentimes erroneously expecting the same situation in adulthood. They are believed to be prone to overspending and financial irresponsibility. This belief, though logical, overlooks one key point which is , of course, education.
