Thinking about taking a year out before going to university? Check out your gap year choices here and decide if it’s the right decision for you…

  What is it?

It’s a year out between finishing school and starting university in which you can travel, work and generally do mind-broadening stuff you will never forget.

I don’t want to travel, but I don’t know what I want to do at university.

You will have a good three months between finishing your A Levels and university Clearing (when last-minute vacancies on courses for the coming academic year are advertised): surely enough time to decide what to do. You don’t need to take a year for that.

I need to take some money before starting university.

Fair enough. But don’t decide to get a full-time job. Spending a year on income-support

will be depressing, you’ll have to lie when future employers ask what you did on your gap year, and you’ll have to put up with smug (得意的) post-gap year students comparing notes when you start university.

I’d love to travel, but I can’t afford it.

Most of gap year students work for the first six months and then travel, using the money they’ve earned, in the second six months.

  I’m scared.

Try not to let fear of the unknown put you off seeing the world. Earth is a big planet, but when you travel it seems much smaller (even the remotest countries have email access).

  29. The passage is probably written to_________.

  A. parents B. teachers C. university students D. high school students

  30. What do we learn about gap year?

  A. Its main purpose is to make money.

  B. Its main purpose is to get work experience.

  C. It comes before you go to university.

  D. It comes after you graduate from university.

  31. If you work a whole gap year, how will you feel when facing post-gap year students?

  A. Upset. B. Proud C. Satisfied. D. Embarrassed.

  32. Most of gap year students get their money for trip ___________.

  A. from the school B. from their parents

  C. by working themselves D. by borrowing from others

  C

Several days ago, I was walking home from school and saw some writing on the fence of a house I was passing by. It said, “Happiness is a direction, not a destination (终点).” I had been having a bad day and just reading this brightened my day a little. I also took out a pen and wrote one of my favorite quotes (格言) down.

When I came back to the fence, I saw another quote under mine in the handwriting as the first one. I added another, and we kept at this pattern for quite a while. One day, I was writing another quote on the fence and the old man, one of my neighbors, who owned the fence, saw me. He came out and I was afraid he would be mad at me for writing on his fence; he was not known to be very friendly. He gave me a sharp glance and then read the quotes on the fence. Without saying a word, he said something to himself and then went back inside. I was a bit terrified for a while, afraid to go back to the fence, but when I did, I noticed not more quotes but two words in entirely different handwriting had been added, “Thank you.”

Later, I saw the old man in his front yard. He beckoned (召唤) me over and told me how my quotes had been inspiring him, how he thanked me and how he was glad to see young people still have “values”. We are now good friend and I talk to him a lot. This experience has changed my life. I still don’t know who wrote that very first quote, but if he is out there, I’d like to say “thanks” to that unknown friend.

  33. Why did the writer begin to write a quote on the fence?

  A. He wanted to practice his handwriting.

  B. He had gotten some help from the quote.

  C. He thought doing this was interesting.

  D. He wanted to catch his neighbor’s attention.

  34. Why was the writer afraid when he found that his neighbor had seen him?

  A. He had thought that the old man was a mad person.

  B. he had once been told the old man was cold-hearted.

  C. He thought the old man would scold him for what he had done.

  D. He thought the old man would tell his parents about his action.

  35. Who must have added “Thank you.” to the fence?

  A. The old man.

  B. Someone else.

  C. The writer himself.

  D. That unknown friend.

  36. We can learn from the passage that __________.

  A. writing quotes on fences is a good idea

  B. the writer has written three quotes on the fence

  C. the good relationship between neighbors is very important.

  D. the old man has changed his opinion about young people.

  D

Education is not an end, but a means to an end. In other words, we don’t educate children only for the purpose (目的) of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life.

In some modern countries it has for some time been fashionable to think that by free education for all---whether rich or poor, clever or stupid---one can solve all the problems of society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough; we find in such countries a far larger number people with university degrees; they refuse to do what they think “low” work; and in fact, work with hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But we have only to think a moment to understand that the work of a completely uneducated farmer is far more important than that of a professor; we can live without education, but we die if we have no food.

If no one cleaned our streets and took the rubbish away from our houses, we should get terrible diseases in our towns.

In fact, when we say that all of us must be educated to fit us for life, it means that we must be educated in such a way that, firstly, each of us can do whatever work suited to his brain and ability, and secondly, we can realize that all jobs are necessary to society, and that is vey bad to be ashamed of one’s work. Only such a type of education can be considered valuable to society.

  37. The writer of the passage thinks that ____________.

  A. education can settle most of the world’s problems

  B. free education for all probably leads to a perfect world

  C. free education won’t help to solve social problems

  D. all the social problems can’t be solved by education

  38. The writer wants to prove that ____________.

  A. our society needs all kinds of jobs

  B. our society needs free education for all

  C. a farmer is more important than a professor

  D. people with university degree refuse to do what they think “low” work

  39. The underlined words “be ashamed of” in the passage means _________.

  A. 为……感到害羞 B.为……感到耻辱

  C. 为……感到荣耀 D.为……感到鼓舞

  40. The purpose of education is __________.

  A. to choose a system of education

  B. to prepare children mainly for their future work

  C. to let everyone receive education fit for him

  D. to build a perfect world
