“In every relationship between human beings, dialogue is the most important factor”, Paulo Coelho (Brazilian author)
The invitation to a job interview is the first hurdle on the way to a new challenge. The company would like to get to know you face-to-face. Your application documents have impressed them. Congratulations!
But there is no need to get too nervous, because with the right help you can master this hurdle too! The important thing to make a success of your interview is to prepare well for it. Being well informed is half the battle.
Get all the important information about the activities and achievements of your potential employer. Many companies present themselves on the internet. You can obtain other information from newspa-pe-r archives, trade associations and from the trade register. Also inform yourself about the current projects and problems of the company.
Before going to the job interview check your documents, think about where the personnel department could ask you (unpleasant) questions and prepare your answers. Be prepared not only to answer questions on your curriculum vitae but also about your hobbies.
The personnel department could for example ask questions like these:
What are your strengths? What weaknesses do you think you have? How would your friends describe you? Why would you like to work here? What did you do in the period from ... to ... ? Why should we choose you for the job? What sets you apart? What do you like about ... (hobby X)? What do you think the work in our company would be like? What are you reading at the moment/ regularly to educate yourself? What is your favourite book? What do you know about our company/ our products/ our philosophy? Why do you want to change your job/ profession? Questions on your curriculum vitae, school education, job experience, standard of knowledge and personality
“Where do you want to be in five years?” – This question belongs to the standard repertoire of personnel managers. They want to know what perspectives you see for yourself and if they go hand in hand with the company’s plans. Long-term planning is indispensable in responsible positions; only in this way is it possible to foresee the consequences of decisions.
Be honest and don’t exaggerate. Try to present your personality in a convincing and truthful manner. Don’t act apart because false behaviour will come to light after several job interviews. The employers want clear, precise and honest answers. But you can also score with clever questions.
Remember that it is not a good idea to ask questions about income, leave and holiday pay, working breaks, overtime regulations or working times at the first interview.
It is better to ask questions like:
What are the objectives of the company? What sets it apart from its competitors? What percentage of the turnover is invested in R+D? What exactly is my job (percentage allocated to each task)? How much free scope do I have? How would you describe the business culture? What is the familiarisation period like? Who are my supervisors and colleagues? Where is my place of employment? Could I possibly visit it? Is it intended to deploy me abroad? What are the opportunities for promotion? Is further training encouraged in the company?
Prepare the questions in writing at home and read through your notes before the interview. By the way, taking documents with you does not give the impression of being unsure; on the contrary it makes you look professional.
Be punctual! That is the most important thing about the job interview. Being late is a bad start and your interviewer usually has only a limited amount of time.
The first impression counts! Often people underrate the aspect of clothing. There is no general dress code but you should appear well-groomed and you should feel comfortable. Often conclusions are drawn from your clothing how you would behave at work. Your clothing should also be appropriate for the job and the branch. Be sure that your shoes are clean. No matter how well dressed you are, if your shoes are dirty, all your efforts are in vain.
Body language and self-confidence are the most important factors for this interview. It is not so important what is said but how it is said. According to the survey “silent voices” conducted by Albert Mehrabian, the content accounts for only 7%, the voice for 38%, and body language for 55%. (These percentages vary, the more technical the job)
Nearly everybody is nervous when it gets to the job interview. Try to be as relaxed as possible and as reserved as necessary. Speak slowly and concentrate yourself on your interviewer.
Give yourself enough time for the interview. It is important that you do not have to leave the interview early because of another appointment. Express your opinion about the interview and say that you enjoyed the conversation, that you find the company even more interesting than before, that you find the job really interesting and the task exciting.
At the end of the interview it should be decided who is to contact whom and when.
A short time later, write to the company thanking them.
Good luck!
