It is a time when the living need warm clothing, and filial Chinese sons and daughters extended this to make the festival a time for providing winter clothes for their ancestors. 重阳节作为中国传统的四大祭祖节日，是怎么由来的，又有着怎么样的传说呢?

传说东汉时，汝南县里有一个叫桓景的农村小伙子，父母双全，妻子儿女一大家。日子虽然不算好，半菜半粮也能过得去。谁知不幸的事儿来了。汝河两岸害起了瘟疫，家家户户都病倒了，尸首遍地没人埋。

他就去东南山拜费长房的大仙为师，学习技艺。后来费长房给了桓景一把青龙剑让他在九月九那天回家除妖。九月九那天瘟魔被桓景杀死了，家乡人民又过上了幸福安康的日子。

从那时起，人们就过起重阳节来，有了重九登高的风俗。

重阳节(the double ninth festival)农历九月九日，为传统的重阳节，又称“老人节”。因为《易经》中把“六”定为阴数，把“九”定为阳数，九月九日，日月并阳，两九相重，故而叫重阳，也叫重九。重阳节早在战国时期就已经形成，到了唐代，重阳被正式定为民间的节日，此后历朝历代沿袭至今。重阳又称“踏秋”与三月三日“踏春”皆是家族倾室而出，重阳这天所有亲人都要一起登高“避灾”，插茱萸、赏菊花。自魏晋重阳气氛日渐浓郁，为历代文人墨客吟咏最多的几个传统节日之一。
