However, officials expect to rejectnumerous applicants after asking them: 'What is your greatest weakness?'Candidates often respond 'with something that is not a weakness,' sayChristopher Morrow, senior vice president of the Calabasas, Calif., concern.'It is a deal breaker.'

The weakness question represents themost common and most stressful one posed during interviews. Yet in today's weakjob market, the wrong answer weakens your chances of winning employment.

Some people offer replies theymistakenly assume that bosses love, such as 'I am a perfectionist.' Thatresponse 'will be used against you' because you appear incapable of delegating, warns Joshua Ehrlich, dean of a master's program in executive coachingsponsored by BeamPines Inc., a New York coaching firm and Middlese-x Universityin London.

A careful game plan could help youcope with the shortcoming query in a way that highlights your fit for a desiredposition. Job seekers who field the question well demonstrate that they can'take initiative and improve themselves,' Mr. Morrow says.

The key? Thorough preparation. Careerspecialists suggest you take stock of your weaknesses, focusing on job-relatedones that won't impede your ability to perform your duties. Tony Santora, anexecutive vice president for Right Management, a major outplacement firm inPhiladelphia, says an information-technology manager flubbed a 2015 interviewby choosing a personal foible as his reply: 'My true weakness is that I am aterrible cook.'

Rehearse your responses aloud, roleplay with a friend or videotape yourself——but don't memorize your words. As youreview the video, look for aspects 'you would like to change so you can continueto get better as you practice,' says Peggy Klaus, a leadership coach inBerkeley, Calif.

The IT manager changed his tune afterpractice sessions with fellow job seekers and a counselor in Cincinnati forRight Management. He instead said he worked such long hours that he found itdifficult to stay current with world events. So, he spent 30 minutes everyevening catching up at home.

When the manager pursued anopportunity at a global drug maker, his revamped response 'really resonatedwith the interviewer,' says Mr. Santora. The manufacturer hired the man.

It's equally important that youconsider an employer's corporate culture. While being interviewed by astart-up, 'you could say, 'My weakness is I get bored by routine,'' says Ben Dattner,a New York industrial psychologist.

Last month, an aspiring executivedirector of a nonprofit group in suburban San Francisco nearly jeopardized hisselection because his reply to a variation of the weakness question ignored oneof its core values, according to Ms. Klaus, a board member there. Near the endof his interview, she wondered whether he might have problems with any aspectsof the job. 'No, I am confident I could do it all,' the prospect declared.

His flip comment dismayed Ms. Klaus, because she felt he lacked awareness of his weaknesses. She says his responseraised doubts among board members that 'he would be able to take criticalfeedback,' an attribute the organization values highly.

Because the man was well-qualified,the board gave him a second interview——and demanded a fuller explanation of hisweak spots. He said he had been 'unprepared for that question and nervous aboutcoming out with a big fatal flaw,' then described his tendency to makedecisions too fast during workplace crises. Board members' doubts disappeared, and they picked him for the nonprofit's top job.

Ideally, your reply also shouldexclude the word 'weakness' and cover your corrective steps. Dubbing yourgreatest fault a 'window of opportunity' signals your improvement effortsshould benefit the workplace, says Oscar Adler, a retired Maidenform Brandssales executive and author of the book, 'Sell Yourself in Any Interview.' Forinstance, he suggests, a salesman might note that he sold more after strengtheninghis facility with numbers.

When an interviewer pops thisnerve-wracking query, your body language counts as well. The wrong nonverbalcues undercut your credibility. Certain candidates hunch over, glance furtivelyaround the room or wring their sweaty palms. 'They sort of look like they'rebeing asked a question they can't handle,' says Mr. Adler.

Maintaining eye contact, regularbreathing and a broad smile impress employers that 'you're prepared for theweakness question,' says psychotherapist Pat Pearson, author of 'StopSelf-Sabotage!'

For the same reason, you seemthoughtful if you pause before responding. But don't wait too long. 'If you'regoing to take a minute,' Mr. Morrow cautions, 'I've just identified yourweakness.'

The one dreaded question that is guaranteed to come up in every interview is "What is your greatest weakness?" Perhaps it's the interviewer's way of weeding out candidates to see who is truly prepared to answer this uncomfortable question. Regardless, you can remove some of the awkwardness by prepping for the question and following these rules.

1. Don't give a cop-out answer

Please don't give tired answers like, "My greatest weakness is that I'm too much of a perfectionist/workaholic." Perhaps it is true for you, but unfortunately, it may bring false to the interviewer who is used to hearing these generic answers that come off as a way to dodge the question.

2. Be honest

Dig deep into yourself and figure out what your true weaknesses are at work. Write them down on a sheet of pa-pe-r, and figure out which ones you can use in an interview. If you state a weakness you've struggled with, your answer will sound more honest. Some things that will help you come up with true weaknesses is to look at some of the challenges you have faced in your previous jobs or think about constructive criticism you've received from a manager.

3. Avoid deal breakers

Although we mention that you should be honest, it's also good to remember that there is such a thing as being too honest. You need to avoid weaknesses that will hurt your chances of getting the job. For example, say if you're applying for an HR position and you say that you're not good with people, or if you're trying for a sales job and you say you are bad at negotiating. This doesn't mean that you have to make up a weakness, but it's just preferable for you to pick another weakness that isn't a deal breaker.

4. Talk about your attempts to overcome your weakness

Always talk about the steps you have taken to overcome your weakness. This is your chance to show the interviewer that although you have your flaws, you are proactive and resourceful enough to overcome them. In a way, your effort to conquer your weaknesses will be looked at as a strength.
