关于人类的起源，在人类早期，就有许多这方面设想的神话。

比如《女娲造人》是中国的神话，《伊甸园里》是西方神话。尽管两则神话故事所产生的地点不同，可以看出东西方文化的差异，但是它们也有许多共同点。第一，两则神话都认为人类并不是从来就有的，无论东方西方，古人早都思考人类起源问题。第二，两则神话都认为人类是被创造出来的，都有创造人的神，不过一则设想为女娲，一则设想为上帝罢了。第三，制造人的材料都设想为泥土，大地是人类的母亲。第四，人的形象都是按照创造者自身的形象设计的。第五，两则神话又都说到人类为什么有男女性的差别。
