The statues in the Yungang Grottoes are magnificent and rich in content, which is regarded as the crown of Chinese stone carvings in the 5th century AD and is known as the treasure house of ancient Chinese carving art. According to the time of excavation, it can be divided into three stages: early, middle and late. The style of grottoes statues in different periods has its own characteristics. The five caves by Tan Yao in the early period were magnificent, with a rich and simple western flavor. In the middle period, the grottoes are famous for their elaborate carving and ornate decoration, showing the complex and magnificent artistic style of the Northern Wei Dynasty. Although the grottoes in the late period were small in scale, the figures were thin and handsome with moderate proportions, which was the model of the grottoes art in northern China and the origin of "thin and clear statues". In addition, the music and dance and acrobatic sculpture left in the grottoes are also the embodiment of the popularity of Buddhist thought and the social life of the Northern Wei Dynasty.
The Yungang Grottoes vividly record the historical track of the development of Indian and Central Asian Buddhist art to Chinese Buddhist art, and reflect the gradual secularization and nationalization of Buddhist statues in China. In Yungang Grottoes, a variety of Buddhist artistic styles have achieved unprecedented integration.
Yungang Grottoes is the beginning of the "sinicization" of grottoes art. The Chinese palace sculpture in the mid-Yungang grottoes and the Chinese-style Buddha shrines developed on this basis were widely used in the construction of later grottoes. The layout and decoration of the grottoes in the late Yungang period more prominently show the strong Chinese architectural and decorative style, reflecting the deepening of the "Sinicization" of Buddhist art.

In the early 5th century, Datong was the capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty, then called Pingcheng. Until the end of the 5th century, the capital was moved to Luoyang. For nearly a hundred years, Datong has been the center of feudal rule in northern China. In the early Northern Wei Dynasty, Buddhism was regarded as the state religion. Here is today's sightseeing destination - Yungang Grottoes. You see, a small grotto is nine meters high, as high as four and a half basketball stands. The large grottoes are 15 meters high, about as high as a five-story building. As soon as one enters the grotto (some of which are accessible), one can see the rays of sunlight coming in through a large hole that looks like a slump, adding to the mystery of the whole grotto. The frescoes on the walls have been battered by the wind and rain. But you see, from some of the relatively well-preserved frescoes, you can see the ancient people to god and Buddha and other beliefs.
Out of the grotto, you can see a stone statue of Buddha similar to the Tathagata, but do not underestimate it. How many people in ancient times were able to carve large and delicate stone statues? One stone statue is the size of three football fields...
Well, now, dear tourists, you can go free. Remember, my name is Director Zhou. I hope I can be your guide again next time. Have a nice trip!
