因为正月是一年之始，广州人往往将它看作是新的一年年运好坏的兆示期,因此过年的时候“禁忌”特别多。言语方面,凡是“破”、“坏”、“没”、“死”、"光”、“鬼”、“杀”、“脖、“痛”、“输”、“穷”等不吉利的字眼,都禁忌说出口来。也忌婴儿啼哭,因为啼哭是“没头彩”，兆示疾并凶祸。故这一天即使小孩惹了祸，也不能打他或呵斥他，以免他啼哭不休。行为方面，端杯、盘、碗、碟要格外小心，不能打坏，不慎打坏时，在取水一俗已经徒有形式而已。禁扫地这一习俗也正在慢慢被淘汰，因为春节期间燃放鞭炮,人来客往，地上纸屑、垃圾特别多,不打扫一下的确有碍大雅。因此，从讲究卫生出发，不少年轻人也就对这些传统禁忌习俗不怎么讲究了。

这一天债主不许上门讨债，因为人们认为这一天讨债对借贷双方均不吉利。也忌从别人口袋里掏东西，人们认为，正月初一的口袋让人掏了，可能导致一年都被“掏空”的危险。

忌死人,也忌办丧事,因为这将给家里带来不祥。同时，忌该天理发，因为人们在这一,天总喜欢把理发同办丧事联系起来。这一天甚至忌杀生,杀生被认为会导致刀灾、兵灾、血灾等灾祸的发生，但是，现在人们生活水平提高了，吃东西图个新鲜，为了口腹之快，也就没什么顾忌了。

饮食方面，这一天严禁吃药。否则，被认为会导致一年从头到底病疾缠身，吃药不断。初一早饭忌吃荤，有几种说法：一种是这一顿吃斋，其功用等于一年;另一种是暗喻指勤俭治家，不可铺张浪费。此刻談論《潛水鐘與蝴蝶》跟《我要安樂死》，無疑既合時又不合時。說它合時，因為前者的電影版上映了，後者的作者斌仔也恰恰於上周的慈善節目裡現身。說它不合時，因為這城巿本來就有太多禁忌，在喜氣洋洋的春節裡更容不下多少哀號，或控訴。

《潛水鐘與蝴蝶》與《我要安樂死》都不是勵志書，兩位全身癱瘓的作者只是老老實實地直陳自己的痛苦。鮑比說：若能把不斷流進嘴巴裡的口水嚥下去，我就是最快樂的人了。斌仔說得更白：這書沒有賺人熱淚的勵志故事，我只是想死而已!如果這些聲音顯得不中聽，那恰恰證明了我們的耳朵老早給寵壞了：甜甜的語言、淺淺的哲理，來吧。
