Can you imagine a city twisting and turning in front of you? Have you ever seen a large train roaring down the street, crashing in to cars and buses? “These can only happen in my dream” you may say. Indeed, the movie Inception brought you and me into a land of dreams. Everything in the movie was not only about some showy special effects but also about some forms of philosophical truths that had philosophers debate for thousands of years: “The nature of dreams and their depth”.
Water flooding into the weird looking traditional Japanese palace, people floating up in the air while shooting each other and staircases leading you endlessly to your starting point, all seemed like ideas coming out of a mad house or from any human dream.
It’s difficult to imagine how our dear old Freud may feel if he were to discover that some his theories, notably how would ego behave in an environment freed from judgments, were labelled “Made in Hollywood” and were being shown under the crispy sound of chewing popcorns. The movie Inception itself, like the famous Escher’s staircase, incepts impossibility under the possibility, or the common sense.
Cobb, the main character, is a skilful thief. He is not those pick pockets interested in mobile phones or wallets, but a professional ‘dream maker.’ He steals information and uncovers all kinds of secrets from people by getting into their dreams and reading their sub conscious mind. In the movie, Cobb was hired by a Japanese energy bigwig, Saito, to try to make Fischer the junior, the boss of another large company, to believe that his father, the previous boss, wanted him to give up competing with Saito, simply by incepting a thought through Fischer’s dream.
It’s difficult to tell the difference between real life and dream, because real life is just another form of dream, and dream is simply an image of real life. The dream-making team used this very theory to break into Fischer’s brain and make him believe in something without raising any suspicion. However this technique, apart from being Cobb’s saviour, was also the very reason why Cobb’s wife committed suicide several years ago.
The movie is voluntarily creating confusion at this point. Not only can’t Fischer tell the dream and real world apart but also the audience suddenly finds out that a terribly bewildering maze has been set and that no one is to be able to get out. At the end of the movie, the director left a big question mark in my head. “Will that top stop spinning?”
My answer is, it will stop and continue spinning at the same time. Remember Cobb’s talk with Ariadne? He said that when you are in a dream, you will not be able to recall the very beginning of the dream.
Let’s focus on the beginning of the movie. Cobb woke up on a beach near the Japanese palace. That place appeared again after Cobb was killed in the dream and fell in to the ‘Limbo’ in the last part. This was a perfect Escher’s staircase! There’s no beginning, because the beginning was an ending itself. We don’t know how Cobb began his life of making dreams, because the movie simply did not explain why. Then, the shocking fact revealed to us: The entire story could be a dream itself!
Then, you may ask, how can the top stop spinning if everything is a dream? Don't forget the fourth dimension: Time. Although we may get to the same point again and again on the Escher’s staircase, that so-called “same point” only means two points sharing the same location, or in other words, the three dimension numbers. We are ignoring the fourth one, as the time we get to these two points are different. This can make great difference. The top can do different things, for time can help it exist in the same place, in the same situation but in DIFFERENT TIMES! It is like a street crossing, different thing could happen when you choose a different way.
These might be a bit confusing. Let’s get to a much simpler explanation. If you read the actors’ names at the back of the movie, you will find out something. There are four people acting in the roles of Cobb’s children. Two of them are three years old and the other two are five years old. You see, it’s still time playing tricks on us.
In a not-too-distant future, no one’s secrets are safe, not even those buried in the deepest recesses of their minds: High-tech“extraction” technology allows teams of spies-for-hire to manipulate the dreams of others, creeping around their thoughts and riffling through their subconscious minds. Dominic Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is the best in the business—good enough that even former victims like corporate hotshot Saito (Ken Watanabe) turn to him when they need someone to do the impossible.
Saito is in a position to offer Cobb the one thing he wants most in the world: a way home. Saito’s connections can erase the murder charge that forced Cobb to flee his country and abandon his children to the care of their grandfather (Michael Caine), and all he has to do in return is get inside the head of Richard Fischhttp://www.wenku1.comer (Cillian Murphy), heir to a multinational empire, and plant the idea to dismantle it so deep that Fischer will believe he thought of it all by himself.
Conventional wisdom has it that mental capital only flows one way: You can dig it out, but you can’t sneak it in. Cobb knows otherwise and assembles a team willing to do the mindwarp with him: chameleon Eames (Tom Hardy), who can assume any identity within a dream; chemist Yusuf (Dileep Rao), whose concoctions facilitate deep, prolonged sleep; architect Ariadne (Ellen Page), who imagines every physical detail of the dream world; and point-man Arthur (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), who sweats whatever details need sweating.
The only newbie in the bunch, Ariadne quickly realizes what the others don’t: that the persistent dream presence of Cobb’s late wife, Mal (Marion Cotillard)—whom he was accused of killing—isn’t just a pesky sign of lingering grief. It’s a giant, flashing-neon warning that Cobb is on the fast track to a full-blown mental meltdown.
By their nature, rubber-reality movies walk a thin line between clever and stupid. But when they work, the balancing act is breathtaking: Just think back to 1999, when The Matrix had fanboys, mall rats and cineastes alike lined up for a tumble down the rabbit hole. Inception owes both The Matrix and the all-but-forgotten Dreamscape(1984), in which a psychic is unwittingly drawn into a plot to assassinate the President of the United States in his dreams, a debt of imagination. But writer-director Christopher Nolan is much more than a crass recycler of other people’s cool ideas, and his greatest strength is the ability to tether pop-culture spectacle to authentic emotions.
If Inception were all spectacle, it would be nothing more than magic trick of the month: nifty but disposable, at the mercy of smart alecks eager to reveal the cogs and wheels behind the illusion. But while one day soon the eye-popping effects will inevitably look dated, Cobb’s misery—a messy mix of grief, guilt, denial and resentment—will continue to feel painfully real. Whether or not history validates comparisons to Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey, Inception is a superior summer movie, one with heart and brains and loads of razzle-dazzle.
Today I’d like to talk about a science fiction film called Inception, which is quite popular .In deed,I think many people have seen it ,even saw it many times.
First, let’s me introduce something about the movie.
In this world, against what he had, there is a very strange title - Pirates of the dreamer. His specialty skills, is sneaking into others dreams, the subconscious steal valuable information and secrets.A rare skill, and soon made him the coveted corporate espionage industry's highly paid object. However, it has also lost his beloved wife for Moore, exile.Because the pain has long been widowed and find themselves unable to Cobb mental torture, finally got the last chance of redemption. Saito,Extremely wealthy, employment Cobb secret deal with their future competitors Fisher - implanted in his mind a thought.
No doubt, both from a technical or from the difficulty, it must be a perfect crime.
The film shows us a different world of science, in-depth analysis of a team to steal a dream.
I have to say it’s really an amazing film. It’s not only the success of Nolan but also for the screenwriters and directors. Because this film made so many guys begin to think deeply and they found happiness doing this and feel satisfied when got some consequence. The most wonderful film I think is what can make your idea free. For this film I got this feeling,I tried to understand the inner meaning by thinking reapeatly in many quite different ways.At last I got a clear understanding and felt I’ve just experienced a long and happy journey.
In the helicopter Saito promised Cobb help him go back home after the task. But when he got into the limbo,he gradually lost his consciousness just like Cobb before. He failed to fulfill his promise and got older in regret. On the contrary Cobb gave the teammates and Saito the most full trust. He take a leap of faith in the circumstances of quite uncertainty and finish the task. He also went to limbo and gave him a chance to go back together to honor the agreement and restart as young men.In the end everyone woke up in the plane,Cobb finished the task and Saito fulfilled his promise to make Cobb’s family reunion.
By means of this task Cobb and Saito both got the importance of trusting each other and save each other from their regres and finally get new life.
So what I think the greatest value of this film is to tell us we should be honest to the choice of our deep mind no matter what forces you to change .The only way to be without regrets even when you get old is not to deceive yourself now.

Inception, which is directed by Christopher Nolan, is a combination of science fiction, romance and action movie. The two key words in the movie are extraction and inception, which are totally opposite. Extraction means extracting some important information from the subject’s unconsciousness when he’s dreaming. While inception means incepting a new idea to the subject, and make the idea deeply rooted in the subject’s mind. Though our hero, Dominic Cobb, acted by Leonardo DiCaprio, is an extractor, this time, he will try to be an inceptor. And if he succeeds he’ll be able to go back to his children.
At the beginning of the movie, Cobb and his extracting group were on an extraction mission in the mind of Saito, using a two-layered dream, which means ‘a dream in a dream’. In the first layer, they were in a secret apartment; and in the second layer, they were somewhere like an assembly hall. While in reality, they were on a train, sleeping. There is a rule in the dream world that if someone died in the dream, he would be back to the upper layer or to the reality. Cobb’s wife Mal showed up in the dream and destroyed his mission. ‘Everyone for himself’ was what Cobb said to his group. Actually, Mal who had already dead was only a projection of Cobb.
Cobb usually uses a top to tell reality from dream. If it is a dream, the top won’t stop spinning when spun.
Later, Cobb was offered a job by Saito to incept an idea to the son of Saito’s competitor, who would soon inherit the control of his father’s corporation, and if he succeeded Saito would help him to go home. Unable to see his children for some reason he himself couldn’t fix, Cobb accepted.
He reconstructed his group and made up the plan: they’d build a three-layered dream, and the first layer would be a city, the second layer a hotel, and the third layer a hospital near a snow mountain. In reality, they were in the first class cabin of a 747. With the group’s joint effort, finally they succeeded and Cobb came back home, with his children. He spun his top again, but it isn’t clear that whether the top would stop or not in the movie.
After watching this movie, what impressed me most are the dialogues. They reflect something about dreams, life, faith, love, and so on. I’d like to share my thoughts of some lines.
